“Ms. Crescent,” he began, his voice faltering on the final syllable.
She sat, shaking upon the exam bench, tears in her eyes. Extraordinarily drawn and pale, she looked impossibly ill for an expectant mother. The past few months had taken nearly every breath of life from her once youthful and beautiful body. Save for her prominent abdomen, she resembled an emaciated corpse. Tears continued to stream from her still vibrant brown eyes as she clutched at her pulsating abdomen.
“Lucrecia…” Vincent whispered, dropping a hand on her shoulder. She grabbed his hand weakly, trying in vain to hide the now ever-present tremor.
“Hello, Vincent.” Lucrecia responded, attempting a smile.
“I can’t stand to see you like this,” he said, drawing himself closer, his voice still a whisper. “We need to get you help. The Jenova project can’t-”
Lucrecia pushed the Turk away, getting cautiously to her feet. “No, Vincent. This mus-” she began, before collapsing to her knees. “The Jenova…project… must…continue.” Her voice shook between rattling breaths. She winced as her abdomen pulsated against her gown.
“This isn’t right! We shouldn’t be doing this! HE shouldn’t be doing this!” Vincent snapped, staring up at the pulsing silhouette on the ultrasound display overhead. “I can’t watch this destroy you!” Before she could raise her voice to protest, he had gone.

Rage brewed in the Turk’s blood as he paced quickly down the immaculate hallway. The corridor to Shinra Lab III was long, well-lit and silent; silent, save for the clicking of his shoes and his heaving breaths. His hand found the holstered gun at his side as he reached the door. Without hesitation, he jammed the intercom button forcefully.
“Let me in.” He commanded fiercely.
“Who is it?” the ‘com inquired, the sing-song voice of the Head of the Research Division.
“Vincent Valentine. Open the door, Hojo.” Vincent spat, not attempting to hide his anger.
The door swung open almost instantly. The dimly lit lab smelled of cigarettes and solder. A perfect 20x20x20 cube, the laboratory was the definition of chaos. Instruments and electrical wiring comingled on the floor beneath tables covered in paperwork and broken beakers. A trio of enormous high-end computer screens hung over a work station, each scrolling with complicated lines of code interspersed the occasional image. At the far end there stood a man in a white lab coat, his long ponytail hanging down his back.
“Hello, Mr. Valentine,” Professor Hojo called, his back still to him.
“Hojo, this has to end. The Jenova project is sacrilege!” Vincent insisted, advancing across the lab.
“The Jenova project is the beginning of everything. I will not end it simply because you cannot see its brilliance.” The Professor remained busy with his work as he spoke. “And you’d do well to watch your tone, boy.”
“It’s KILLING Lucrecia. I’m not going to stand by and watch this go on any longer!” The Turk roared.
“Mr. Valentine, Ms. Crescent elected to do this. Her child; OUR child will be the beginning of a new age! If you have a problem with the way my research is going, request a new assignment.” He turned to face Vincent, a sinister smile on his face.
“No. I’m ending this. I’m not watching her suffer any longer. That thing in her has to die. Stop this, now!” The two stood just feet apart.
“I see only one thing that has to die here, Mr. Valentine.” Hojo’s hand emerged from his pocket, clasping a revolver. In one swift motion, he leveled it at the Turk.
Vincent’s hand shot to his side, his fingers fumbling to extract his sidearm. A second later a loud BANG echoed throughout the lab as he slipped into darkness.
