At least five NPCs (they will be primes) will be present on the island. These NPCs may be Site NPCs or NPCs created specifically for Dante’s Abyss. These NPCs will be competing in Dante’s Abyss. They will be subject to the same restrictions as any other prime in the competition. They will also receive a random weapon.

Unlike player characters, the NPCs all travel at a set interval every 12 OOC hours. Near the end of each thread, I will post an ‘NPC Update’ that will include what the NPC has done for the last half-day.

In the event that a player enters the same square as an NPC, a Face to Face will occur just as if they had encountered another PC. Despite the fact that an NPC is involved, the F2F will follow the same rules, and I will be making the same considerations. As NPCs won’t be writing, I can’t really judge the writing/story of the character as I would with a PC. Due to this, each NPC will have a pre-set ‘Handicap’ (from 1 to 5) that I will consider when they are fighting with a PC. A higher handicap indicates a character that will be harder to kill.

NPCs will move after participating in a Face to Face.

Due to the random nature of weapons, do not expect NPCs to be pushovers. If you have a spork and are fighting an NPC with a high handicap who also happens to have the rocket launcher, you should expect bad things to happen.

NPCs, along with their handicap, will be included in the Profile forum.

Note – When half of the contestants are dead, any surviving NPCs will start to roam like normal players.

The private messaging system is the official way that updates will be done for Dante’s Abyss. You may ask me general questions through other media, but updates and official correspondence must go through the PM system. Do not send your movements or updates through anything else. I’ll kindly redirect you once and then just ignore you.

Keep some space in your inbox. If I get a message bounced back to me, I will not bother to do so again. This is your warning.
By default, all your messages should be copied into your ‘Sent Folder.’ Make sure this is set so you can retain the messages you receive from me, at least for the day that they are relevant. Why? I have a large inbox, but I will be deleting things as I receive them, because my space isn’t infinite and I also just hate clutter in general (I'm not one of those people that has like, 900 unread messages in their gmail account... that's gross).

As a result, I may accidentally delete a message that I shouldn’t have. I probably won't, but it could happen.

If that happens, the burden is then on you to provide me with proof. I’m a nice guy (ask my students), but for this contest, I won’t be giving you the benefit of the doubt. Send me a screenshot or a screen capture, and I’ll gladly reverse the decision.

Also be aware that a message will be in your Outbox Folder until it is read by the recipient. This way, you can know whether or not I read your private message yet, so there should be no confusion.

Just like in the Omniverse, you can take 20 points of damage in Dante’s Abyss. At 20, your character dies and will wake back up in the lobby. In this pocket verse, however, how the damage accrues is slightly different.

Damage results from ‘Face of Face’ events. You accrue points of damage from injuries and super moves.

The only way to heal damage is if you have a Support Item whose stated purpose is to heal damage. I repeat – you cannot heal damage in any other way. Your character can improvise bandages or splints, but this will not positively impact your damage and the severity of your injuries will remain unchanged.

Super Moves – Super Moves cause damage equal tothe SP cost. A Tier 1 Super Move that hits full-on will deal 2 points of damage.

Injuries – Face to Faces will almost always result in injuries. Injuries in Dante Verse work on a slightly accelerated rate than injuries in the rest of the Omniverse. Injuries and how many points they deduct are listed below:

Story Injury (0 pts) – These are extremely insignificant injuries, like a small cut or abrasion. They are for roleplay purposes only.

Minor Injury (2-4 pts) – Minor injuries will hinder you but they’re not terribly serious. These are like deep cuts that may take a while to stop bleeding. These also include things like sprains and minor head injuries. They can be healed completely with 1 use of a healing item.

Major Injury (6 pts) – These are things like broken limbs, impaired senses (like blindness), serious head injuries, and lacerations that won’t stop bleeding on their own. These can be healed down to Minor Injuries with a healing item but won’t go away completely.

Insane Injury (10 pts) – These are injuries you CANNOT heal whatsoever. Things like lost or mutilated limbs. An insane injury guarantees that you’re not going to enjoy the rest of the game.

Mortal Injury – These are very rare, but they can happen. These are insane injuries that will kill you within 12 IC hours unless you are healed. Unlike an Insane Injury, a healed Mortal Injury becomes a Major Injury.

Death – In the event that your character accrues 20 points of damage, they will die and ‘respawn’ in the lobby (first half of competitors) or the medical lab (last half of competitors). From there, they will be ushered into an exit hall and to a machine that will teleport them to the verse of their choosing (except the Oververse or Void).

Competition and Judging

Welcome to the premier event in survival. In Dante's Abyss, you are writing your character's experience on the island. You, the writer, are also taking place in a game that requires a great deal of luck and strategy. As much as this is a competition about writing engaging characters, this is also a contest of wits between the members of the community.

Many things are in your control -- Your allies, where you move, how you spend SP, how your write.

But somethings are out of your control -- Your starting Weapon/Item and the various fights that occur.

Anytime that two or more characters land on the same square, a ‘face to face’ will occur.

A ‘Face to Face’ is a confrontation authored by the Host of Dante’s Abyss. The moment a ‘Face to Face’ occurs the Host will make a post in the thread that states ‘Face to Face’ and includes the characters involved. Those characters cannot post in the meantime (anyone else may continue to post normally).

When a Face to Face has happened, you'll see a post like this:

Quote:
Face to Face
Retane, Guu, Atelos

I won't reveal who may be allied with who until the actual conflict is edited into the post. Depending on the characters involved and the complexity of judging the confrontation, the Face to Face will be up as soon as 15 minutes and as late as an hour and a half. If something happens where I will take longer than 90 minutes to write the post, I will let the players involved know this (this could happen, my life can be goofy sometimes).

The Face to Face is where the action will be. It is where characters will be injured and killed. It is also the one part of the writing that is wholly out of your control. After a Face to Face, the surviving characters may continue to roleplay (probably dealing with the consequences of what happened). Anyone who survives a Face to Face will receive a 'cool down' of 8 OOC hours or the end of the current 'phase' (or until they move from their square) to prevent them from being jumped in the event that their opponent leaks their location in private to interested parties.

With that said, I’ll get into the meat and potatoes of what you all probably care the most about.

“How do you determine who wins a Face to Face?”

When I sit back and figure this out, I’m considering 4 factors – Prior Injuries, Weapons, My Opinion of the character, and any 'queued' Powers ups.

1 – A character who already has a lot of injuries will be at a natural disadvantage in a fight. That’s just ‘real’ life. If you have 1 arm and the person trying to kill you has 2, you better have a way to get around your handicap.

2 – Weapon match ups are also considered, especially when I decide on injuries or deaths. Having a better weapon can mean that you’ll have a high chance of grievously injuring or killing your opponent. On the other side, a powerful weapon can also help you avoid taking excessive damage if you are outmatched by a better character.

3 – By ‘my opinion,’ I essentially mean just that. I'm the sole judge. That means everything is based off my opinion and mine alone. I'm not biased to an individual but I do hold bias towards how I like to read things. Obviously, I can't control what I do and do not enjoy, but I can be fair and let you in on it.

4 – Powers up can provide a boost for those entering a fight, especially if they don't have the best weapon at their disposal. Will power ups compensate you for being outnumbered or out-gamed? No. Could a power-up let you walk away from a fatal encounter or take an advantage in what would otherwise be an even fight? Maybe/yes.

Unlike how I grade fights in the Omniverse, there is no point value or anything. I'm going to simply read everything and give a final decision based off my opinion. Just to make this known ahead of time – the number of roleplays you make or the length of them will not influence my decisions. Just because you roleplay every day doesn't mean you are going to kick the most ass.

There are many writers who may post just once and it will be more effective than 2 or 3 posts from someone else. Find your balance but do not overdo yourself in the hopes of it swinging anything in your favor. You don’t want me to get bored or feel over-saturated by your character.

In terms of post length, I prefer short to medium posts. I don’t want to read novels, and I’ll be honest, I start to get bored and zone out if a post is terribly long and not all that interesting. I know when I'm just reading fluff or filler. That is a bad thing for you.

I love emotion and reading a character's thoughts and feelings of the current situation. I don’t care for their past, pre-Omniverse or otherwise, unless it has something to do with the here-and-now.

I love descriptive posts, but on that same note, I abhor purple prose and anything that reads like you went through a thesaurus. Be genuine.

When I’m on the verge of killing someone in a fight, I will ask myself the following questions…

-Do I want to find out more about this character?
-Do I feel this character can bring bigger things to him/herself or others?
-Do I want to continue to root for, or against (it should be obvious that I like antagonist) this character?

Things like that. It's all about the character, not just how much you write or even how great you write. Although if you’re terrible with grammar, I’ll zone out and things will go downhill. I got enough of that during the school year.

Bottom Line - I know a lot of people simply can't change how they write. That's fine. Don't. But at least attempt to go over a few of these guidelines I've put in here and incorporate into your own style, rather than completely changing it. If you have a style that I just can't get into, and you refuse to improvise, then that's a problem for both of us.

Other Bottom Line - In registering and partaking in this, you are agreeing to the fact that I will write your character at points. That said, I read extensively when I can, and while I will not master every character in this contest, I will do my best to make sure that I don't have them do something they wouldn't do in a fight. I like to think I can grasp most characters quite quickly, and if you doubt this, you can ask Atelos/Gilgamesh for his opinion on how I write his character. Also, if you're in a Face to Face, I hope you'd stick around so I can reach out to you if I have a question, especially for those first few frantic days of wide-scale combat.

Every day in-character equals four days out-of-character (1 Day IC = 4 Days OOC)

Each day will consist of two threads (Day X Morning and Day X Evening)

Twenty-four hours after a thread is posted, I will lock the thread for less than one hour to post an update that includes any deaths, any new danger zones, and signaling sunrise or sunset.

Every day OOC (or every 6 hours IC), you may move up to three times (or three spaces). You move by sending me a private message stating what squares you want to move through ("I move from G4 to H4 to H3 to H2"). This will be important once Danger Zones become more prevalent. You may not move diagonally, but you may move over one square and up one square (be aware that you’d be using two moves). Only the spot you wind up on will determine if you are in a Face to Face, so some of you may want to move one space at a time, rather than all three at once.

Movement is optional, you may choose to stay in the same spot if you think you’ll be safe or you want to wait for someone to find you. Remember that moving in or even trying to move through a danger zone means prolonged death. Do not do it
Moves do not accumulate or build up over time.

Everyone who signs up for Dante’s Abyss and is accepted to the roster is fitted with a collar and stripped off all of their Items (and Moves that function as items or weapons – guns, blasters, swords, sensors etc.). Dante's Abyss is a competition of survival, not flashy combat with fancy dancy things. Karl Jak doesn't care what you were in the Omniverse. He cares what you are beneath all the pomp.

The collar acts as a suppressor for various powers and skills, forcing characters to rely more on their wits and grits to survive (plus a little bit of strategy and luck). Attempting to remove the collar will result in your immediate and violent death. Your will return to the Fountain and have to wait twice as long to reincarnate.

The following are prohibited due to the collars your characters must wear in the competition:

-Regeneration and Healing
-Flying
-Enhanced Senses
-Assists (Exceptions may apply - We'll talk at joining)
-Just about all Moves (see below)

-Summoning and Extracting of OM is inhibited

The following are severely limited due to collars

-Telekinesis is reduced to within ten feet of your position, regardless of level or TEC & all weapon/support items are immune to telekinesis (because dantephysics)
-Teleportation is reduced to within five feet of your position, regardless of level or TEC
-Super Jumping is reduced to ten feet, regardless of level
-Time Manipulation is reduced to only a few seconds and stopping time is impossible
-Fusion is limited to just Basic Fusion
-This is more of a notice than anything else - Stealth and Shapechange cannot be used to avoid Face 2 Faces

Note - Honestly, don't be surprised (or angry, for that matter) if most of your move set is barred/inhibited. Moves don't make the character. You, the writer, make the character.

Moves

Access to moves has been prohibited/inhibited by the collars all contestants are forced to wear. The collars prevent the summoning of weapon-based moves and the execution of offensive moves (like magic) and most advanced application of Powers. Any 'natural' weapons (claws, tails, etc) will be treated as incidental weapons, compared to the artefact Weapon/Support Items that contestants are provided with.

Certain moves that serve more utility functions may be permitted, but a character should operate under the assumption that they will have no Moves.

SP (Power Ups, Super Moves, and Fusion)

The collars grant everyone 3 SP + 1 SP for every level. This was done mostly to keep things interesting given the large number of level 1 and level 2 characters while not penalizing level 4 people.

Super Moves and Powers up of all flavors are welcome, but they must be 'queued up' if you want your character to use them in the event of a Face to Face.

Fusion is also welcome for allies, but be aware that it will cost you both 1 SP and any damage sustained by the fusion will be equally split between the two constituent characters.

Just like in the Omniverse, Super Moves deal damage to other players (more on this to come), where as having a queued Power Up, Powered Up form, or Fusion can provide you with a tactical advantage in a Face to Face (more to come).

Level 0 Super Move - Level 1 characters who were unable to purchase a super move before the contest will be able to utilize Level 0 Super Moves (which function much like desperation attacks). When you register please select one of your moves to be upgraded to a Level 0 Super Move for the duration of Dante's Abyss or create one from scratch. A level 0 super move costs 1 SP and is half as effective as a Level 1 Super Move. You do not need to purchase this.

If you want your character to queue up a Power Up, Powered Up Form, Fusion or/and a defensive or offensive Super Move of any type for potential use, you must let me know ahead of any Face to Face you get into. You may queue up both a defensive and offensive Super Move if you want to.
*Note - I may (and probably will) add more terms and questions to this page as they become apparent to me over the course of the #hypetrain*

First, here is a glossary of both acronyms/abbreviations and terms that I may throw around. Some of these may be no-brainers, but I like to dot all my I's and cross all my T's.

PC = Player character (a character controlled by a human writer)
NPC = Non-player character (a character controlled by the host)
F2F = 'Face to Face', a confrontation between two or more characters written by the story host (Proto Man)
Collar = The collar acts to inhibit certain powers, moves, and other traits that make primes special. Depending on your character, it may have little effect on them or it may have a profound impact on them.
'Weapon' = I will use the term weapon to describe the randomized items included in your survival bag, even if it's not a weapon (for example - I will call binoculars a 'weapon' even though they are more of a utility item)
DA = Dante's Abyss
Syntex = The corporation headed by Karl Jak and used as a front for most of his operations

****

Below are a list of answers to questions that may be common among people reading through this. I will add to this if I feel it necessary.

1. What is Dante's Abyss? ---> "Dante's Abyss is a survival game, inspired by the Battle Royale Manga. It pits characters against one another in a struggle for survival. It is equal parts a writing contest and a tactics game. By playing smart, any character can make a name for his-, her-, or itself, regardless of how much OM they have accumulated.

2. Where does this take place? – “Dante’s Abyss takes place in ‘Dante Verse,’ a pocket verse with slightly modified ‘omniphysics.’ Dante Verse was discovered by Karl Jak as a blank slate filled with raw Omnilium, and he has spent the last several years converting the place into the facility and island you see today. He speaks as if there are even more islands out there, but obviously no one save Karl Jak has been beyond the facility.

3. What is Karl Jak’s story? Where is he from? -- “Karl Jak is from an alternate Dragon Ball Z timeline that deviated long before Goku was born and wound up only resembling the show in the sense that some of characters were the same and they all shot energy from their palms n' stuff. He doesn’t talk about where he comes from, because he likes to talk more so about himself, but where he comes from explains his familiarity with super-powered individuals and his references to any ‘previous tournaments.’

4. What if I’m not a killer…? – “You don’t have to be a killer to enter or win Dante’s Abyss. Sure, it helps, but the more noble individuals may look at this as a way to better themselves. You could even have your character tricked into registering and forced to deal with the reality (honestly that could make for a very intriguing storyline). I feel that the best power of a writer is the ability to adapt and stretch outside their comfort zone. I believe in you. Do you believe in yourself?”

5. My prime can't summon... will I starve if I don't find food? - "The short answer is 'no.' I will not be tracking your reading to see whether or not your character is eating and drinking or showering or whatnot. Will it make for better writing if you have your character struggle to locate supplies and force them to struggle with some of the mundane aspects of living they might not experience as a prime outside the Dante Verse? Possibly."

6. Why Join? - "What do you have to lose? Nothing. Except perhaps your innocence. What do you have to gain? OM, Fame, artefact(s?). What are you waiting for? Register."

7. What about my NPCs or my other character? - "You may only join as one of your characters, if you have two. You may also not bring along any npcs when you venture to the island. You may, however, bring those NPCs to the staging area and have them watch the competition from there, or you may have them watch from elsewhere in the Omniverse."

8. How will I hear about this? - "Even though I (Proto Man) may not go overboard with posts in various verses, there isn't a place you can go and not hear about this competition in some way or another. Karl Jak is able to broadcast almost anywhere from his facility, and his partnership with the ONN ensures that they will muscle out any other competition for air-time. This, combined with the scale of the event and the hype surrounding it, will make it something that everyone will be interested in, from the Empire and the Kingdom all the way down to the gorons and the otherwise politically apathetic residents of Cinnibar Island. Think about the Super Bowl, the Olympics, and the World Cup all rolled into one."

9. Oh noez, mah moves - "Moves don't define you -- You do. Losing something that you may consider integral to your character will only force you, as a writer, to develop and challenge yourself to think outside the box. You can do it. I believe in you."

10. Can I keep the Weapon I get after the game? - "You can't keep the actual item, as they're all technically Artefacts for the purpose of being able to ruin prime's lives. You're more than able to create a Move after the contest, if you want another memento of your DA experience."

Dante’s Abyss is the premier event in survival.

Dante’s Abyss itself will take place in what is called ‘Dante Verse,’ a pocket verse discovered by the contest’s host, Karl Jak.

The staging area is a lavish and modern facility comprised of the following landmarks/areas:

The ‘Lobby’ – A grand hallway where the arrivals filter in from the verses. The Lobby is connected to four large domes. At the far end of the hallway is an elevator that leads up to the barracks on the top floor.

The Library – A massive, multi-floor room containing books, newspapers, and audio recorders from various points in history and various realities.

The Recreation Dome – This contains various restaurants and bars serving a plethora of cuisines spread out across a few levels. The top several floors contain a handful of high-tech movie theatres screening blockbusters old, new, and alien.

The Park – A large ‘outdoor’ area contained within a dome. The park resembles Central Park and contains a small lodge where they sell picnic goods and rent athletic equipment.

The Dojo – This area contains a mixture of gym equipment and physical fitness courses. There are even a few private dojos where people can get in some last minute training in anything ranging from combat to general survival skills.

The Barracks – At the highest point of the Dante Preshow Area is the barracks, where the contestants selected for the game will be ushered (via the elevator at the far end of the Lobby) upon their selection. The barracks contains a common area for the contestants to hang out, if they so desire. Each contestant has a very small room to sleep in that contains a bed. Contestants do not receive their bags until being transported to the island.

Once the field of contestants has been selected, there will be one final hour of rest and relaxation before all contestants will be collared (which will inhibit many of their abilities) and teleported to random locations on the Island. They will arrive with their survival bags (which includes a random weapon or support item) and the mantra of the game – ‘Find each other. Kill each other.’

Over the course of the next few days, contestants must survive on the island. Players will move around on a grid, either hunting for their foes or trying to avoid crossing paths with one another. When two players move to the same square without the intention of allying, a face-to-face is initiated, in which the judge determines the outcome and writes out the confrontation. Face to faces (F2Fs) can result in injuries, deaths, or other things (like losing gear). Afterwards, the two characters resume their gambit to survive the contest.

There is no set strategy, although as time goes on grids will become impassable danger zones. Characters may seek out allies and forge strong friendships in the midst of the Abyss. Another player may find fleeting friends to guard their back before stabbing them in back. You may be the hunter—seeking prey with the hopes of accumulating weapons and fame. Or you may be the person who hides out, skirting around danger zones as you hope to outlast the more violent competitors.

Either way, the game ends when there is only one person left alive on the island. That one person becomes the Champion of the Abyss and will receive an exorbitant amount of fame for their accomplishment… as well as the reward of cold, hard omnilium and their choice of artefacts (that's an s at the end of that word).
