Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Proto Man - 02-09-2015

So since i had an awesome tax refund this year, I want to build my own desktop. I previously did so about five years ago, when I was in college and had access to dat sweet sweet college loan refund money.

I was wondering if anyone else has built a computer or has interesting in discussing/sharing things with me? Otherwise I'll probably just post up my selections and, when I eventually accrue the parts, my construction of the Gantrithor Mark II.

Drop a budget too Tongue. Its hard to suggest anything without knowing what you are willing to spend.

Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Cloud Strife - 02-09-2015

I have built a computer, and I have to say, mine's a pretty good one, most games released today run on it fine (better than average for a custom built gaming computer) and it cost me $1300

Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Proto Man - 02-09-2015

My last one cost me... 700? And it could run max-spec'd Crysis (like I said, this was 2009).

My budget this time around will probably be similar. I don't have too much time for gaming, so I don't want to sink too too much into it. It doesn't need to be gold-plated.

This would be my personal suggestion. It will cover you in every single respect for your sparse gaming. However, it will not max out every game at 1080p, things like the modern Metro Last Light title will eat this for breakfast, however, all games will be playable if you just reduce anti aliasing settings.

Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Schwi Dola - 02-10-2015

Personally I would bump up the power supply. A nice 800 watt one doesn't cost that much more and will last into future computer builds and when you want to add more stuff later.

Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Omni - 02-10-2015

I would recommend pushing the boat out on the processor. This is because it is difficult to swap out compared to say, the graphics card or RAM. I have quite a beefy processor on mine and haven't regretted it, since it's kept up after I've upgraded almost every other component. Bear in mind that I bought my PC premade so it just sort of came that way, but I did pick the one with the big processor. :psy:

Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Cloud Strife - 02-10-2015

Hmm, Omni has a good point, a processor can be tricky to replace or change, where other things are much easier, but Proto, you could probably build a decent computer for 900

Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - DioBrando - 02-10-2015

A processor is only hard to install because of the heat sink you have to put on it.

However, for someone newish to computers I'd probably bump it up to an i5-4960 in that build.

It'll run you another 130 and put you at 670, and then a 30 dollar upgrade to the PSU will leave you with plenty of upgrade headroom while keeping you at the desired 700 mark.

Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Cloud Strife - 02-10-2015

^ This is also a good option

Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Shang Tsung - 02-12-2015

Only qualm I have (and this is me being superfluous) is that I need to have a pretty case. Nothing makes me sadder than black or white boxes.

I've been looking at cases from Cooler Masters, because they're both pretty, large, and (for the most part) seem pretty good.

Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - DioBrando - 02-12-2015

Pretty cases cost money.

This is the cheapest option I could find that I really thought looked nice and offered function.

Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Magus - 02-15-2015

Best build you can really do for gaming is:

i5 quad-core. Basically whichever model you want but latest is usually best (better than this is completely pointless for gaming)
8 GB RAM (again, anything better is pointless - your game will not use it)
Get an R9 290. It's barely more expensive than a 280x and much much better.

All the rest. Mine cost me about $1300 CAD but I built it from scratch. If you can repurpose a tower here, HDD there, etc, you'll save yourself lots of money. Do yourself a favor and get an SSD for your boot/OS drive. Even 128 GB. Everything boots/loads/runs so goddamn fast, you'll never be able to go back to an old timey HDD.

Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Proto Man - 02-16-2015

Thinking of a Cooler Master 932 for my case. Reminds me of my old case #nostalgic

Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Omni - 03-06-2015

I use a SSD and HDD combo. Programs etc on the SSD, and then all my downloads etc on the HDD. Best of both worlds (since anything bigger than 512 SSD is prohibitively expensive, and I need mega space for porn)

This. Except for porn. That's what streaming's for, Grampa.

Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Proto Man - 03-10-2015

Just bought my case. Next paycheck I'll probably grab the power block (I like the Corsair on in that build you posted Dio) and a hard-drive.

Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Proto Man - 03-23-2015

What's a decent wattage in a power supply. My last was a 700, so I'm leaning that way, because I'd like something that can be upgraded in the future without being overly taxed.

Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - DioBrando - 03-23-2015

700 will cover even your enthusiast grade cards like the 970 and 980, with and AMD Processor you'd probably need an 800 though for things like the 295x and GTX Titan series type of cards.

Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Proto Man - 03-23-2015

Probably go with 700... I don't see myself shelling out 600+ dollars on a graphics card anytime soon XD

Gracias.
