Ask and Recieve - Koehler - 06-20-2018

”It’s been two days. How do you feel?” Alex dared to ask, having witnessed the devastation that was wrought via Cole’s eyes. Entire populaces were wiped out, islands lost, and fleets sunk, lost to the depths. It’s been two days since the invasion by the enigmatic organization known as Nebula.

Cole didn’t offer an answer, instead continuing to look out to the horizon at the fore of the Imperial ship, a simple twin-masted carrack with billowing white, triangular sails, the ocean water spraying across the front as it crashed through the waves. The salt-tinged wind blew softly behind him as the ship rocked about, sailing on without a care as sailors hustled to and fro attending to sail, cannon, and cargo.

He stood there, paying little heed to it all. The captain long since gave up on telling him to remain inside like the other passengers, the refugees that they had managed to recover. The ones they all had barely managed to save.

”Typical heroism, deriding yourself for failure outside of your power to avoid. I see my grandchild hasn’t grown up at all.” Fumetsu chided.

“Shut up.” Cole muttered, his voice washed out as the ship broke through another wave and heaved upward, then downward, crashing into the water as it sprayed upward.

”Your failure was being weak, not for some lack of initiative or intellect, much as you poorly rank in both. Had you relied on my lessons more, you would have fared better.” Fumetsu continued in his typical condescension.

“Shut up!” Cole shouted, bringing the sailors’ attention to him. Cole glanced back at them, reflexively grasping the empty sleeve of his jacket that was flapping in the wind. His missing arm ached again. So annoying…

Cole turned back to look ahead, letting go of the stub of an arm he had left and instead reaching into his pocket to grab the communicator he recently made. A phone, one of the newer models from his world, with a large, thin rectangular shape dominated exclusively by a blank, black screen. It was rather simple gadget to make using Omnilium, but according to the captain and the other officers he talked to while helping with the recovery efforts, it was all too important to have in this world.

Not that he knew what to do with it. It’s not like he remembered to note down the numbers of the other Liberators he parted ways with before.

He stared at the blank screen, as if waiting for something to happen. For answers, questions, he didn’t know. He didn’t know what to do in this world beyond fight machines and corrupted humans, like he used to always do, though usually with two arms rather than one.

Of course, he wasn’t exactly expecting it to light up at that thought and start ringing loudly, as it did, and in his surprise, he almost fumbled it into the water below. He bounced it from one knee, to the other, and then caught it in his hand again in a hurry, breathing a sigh of relief once he got hold of it again.

He didn’t even think to look at who it was that managed to find his number before answering.

“Hello?”

RE: Ask and Recieve - Weiss Schnee - 06-21-2018

For a moment, only silence came through the phone line, as though it was just a wrong number. Then, a long, slow sigh of irritation blasted through the speaker of the device.
For a moment, the voice was quiet, then, finally, came a familiar, irritable voice.

“I see you weren’t completely successful in preventing any damage to the Deeps. I hope you understand that this makes our race look bad. If you participate in this sort of work in the future, I hope you’ll remember that it is your duty as a quincy to not only report mission success, but to report better success than any other group in the Omniverse. There are only two quincy in this world to my understanding: I won’t have you smearing our organization with a D average.”

Nayamasa was ready for a whiny sigh from the other side of the phone. “...Nayamasa?”

The silence from the other side of the phone was uncharacteristically long before the reply came from the other side.

“It’s good to see other quincy have appeared in the Omniverse.” The old Quincy replied.

The beginnings of a reply from Cole were immediately strangled by Nayamasa’s harsh business tones overwrote any reply “-particularly since I’ve need of you at the moment. There is a certain woman I want you to track down. My sources state she’s headed to camelot at the moment, but it’s uncertain. Her name is Weiss Schnee.”

“I think you actually mean to say-”

“Different planet, Koehler.” Nayamasa snapped. “Different pronunciation.”

“Riiight.”

“In any case, I’m interested in having the two of you meet. While you were off in the Deeps, I’d sent her to deal with the threat in the Frozen Fields.”

“...Why is this girl important? Is she a quincy too?”

There was another pause on the other end of the phone, before the answer came. “She’s distinctly linked to someone I’m currently tracking. Someone else from our world. A hollow. Powerful. Incredibly ancient. Insane. Has a remarkable ability to disguise herself, at least from this world’s ‘heroes’. She goes by the name--”

“Saiko.” The words dripped with cold venom.

“Have you had dealing with this woman already-”

“What was the last thing you- I mean, Where were you- I just-”
Koehler’s voice fell silent, and Nayamasa was the next one to speak.

“...what is it?”

“...I’ll… Where are you? I don’t want to do this over the phone.”

“I’ll be around in good time. Wait for me until then.”

“Damnit Naya-”

The click on the other end of the phone was swift, leaving Koehler with no answers.

“-masa…” Cole left the note hang in the air.

His thoughts energetically danced about his mind, emotions clashing violently. Anger, hope, grief, confusion.

”He’s alive, but she’s here… Who’s Weiss? What is the Omniverse? What’s going on?!

It was all Cole could manage to not throw the phone in frustration. Instead, he pocketed the device and, somehow managing a thin veil of calmness, began picking the conversation apart. It was a lesson he learned from Fumetsu, to take what was said more carefully and gleam important information. How something was said was equally or even more important than what was said. Though, Fukaku was as cryptic as always.

”Saiko is alive. Fukaku is alive. And I have to find this “Weiss” person…”

”Simple information, really. What of it?” Fumetsu commented amusedly.

“I need my arm back. Now, Fumetsu.” Cole snapped back.

”What would two arms help as compared to your last meeting with her, exactly?”

“Fumetsu.” Cole’s voice was cold and terse.

”Don’t be so presumptuous, child. I am not one of your family’s servants, I was one of its greatest.”

”Oh, that’s laughable coming from you.” Alex chimed in with a huff, ”You forfeited your ties to the family when you killed me. I would also point out that, in this world, Cole is your only lifeline.”

”Enough!” Cole shouted with an explosive aura of flame enveloping him, catching the other sailors off-guard in shock from the sudden outburst. “I’m not here to prove anything to either of you! Fumetsu, teach me to restore my arm, now!”

”The child has a spirit.” Fumetsu hummed, ”Very well, though you would be wise to listen to what else I have to say.”
