Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S1 (Completed)
So, I've been trying to get back into anime. Not sure what's new that's good. Any suggestions?

I respond well to slice of life comedies, particularly with a fairly good female cast. Mostly willing to branch out

Currently watching through Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. Very sweet series, though slightly hampered by it's source material...

Seriously, what's with KyoAni adapting manga that has heavy fan service and turning them into heartwarming tales? Where were they when the Kodomo no Jiikan or Boko no Pico animes were made? They could have saved the world from that filth...

RE: Suggest me Anime - Professor Sunshine - 09-03-2017

Dragon Ball Super. Nuff said.

RE: Suggest me Anime - Handsome Jack - 09-03-2017

Yuri on Ice. Mostly male cast, but very good.

Food Wars is also good. It has a mixed cast and makes references to many other animes.

If you haven't seen it yet, Kill La Kill is pretty freaking good. Centered mostly on females (though there are males), but it's actiony.

RE: Suggest me Anime - Guu - 09-03-2017

@Syn Shenron: Hmmm... I need to finish Kai, but I rage quit when Goku neglected to take heart medicine from the future because of stupid ass pride. Been following Dragon Ball Abridged since instead, but Super will probably be long and gone before DBZA even reaches the Buu saga.
We'll see... Kai is on cruchyroll now... I think... Maybe I will muscle it... I mean, when I feel up to it.

@Cell: Why is it called Yuri on Ice when most of the cast is male? I've always wondered that. Is there like, a single lesbian couple competing in a co-ed skating tournament?

I've heard a lot of good things about Food Wars. I've also been warned to plan viewings around meals. Maybe I'll watch the first episode during breakfast tomorrow.

I remember avoiding Kil la Kill back in the day because the huge political fuss surrounding it around the time of it's release left a bad taste in my mouth. However, that's long gone and I should really give the show another chance. Especially since Mako is a really fun character.

I'll probably tackle Food Wars first, or at least give it a shot.

RE: Suggest me Anime - Handsome Jack - 09-03-2017

The main character's name is Yuri. It's also SUPER gay.

My wife likes Food Wars enough that she watched it like 12 times in a row. She has it on daily. I think you'll enjoy it too.

I think you'll enjoy Kill La Kill. It's got an interesting concept and it's got plenty of humor.

RE: Suggest me Anime - Amaterasu - 09-04-2017

I second Jeff on Food Wars - both in the regard that it's an amazing series and that you should plan your meals around it, because it cranks the trope "Food porn" up to eleven and then some. (Also if you like cooking, the recipes are all real. There's even recipes)

I'll recommend others as I think of them, my mind is blank right now :derp:

RE: Suggest me Anime - Professor Sunshine - 09-04-2017

Actually DBZA Cell Saga ends on Episode 60.

RE: Suggest me Anime - Belle - 09-04-2017

My Hero Academia.

RE: Suggest me Anime - Handsome Jack - 09-04-2017

I recommended that to her via the CB, too. Such a good show.

RE: Suggest me Anime - Trixie - 09-04-2017

Date Alive I and II

RE: Suggest me Anime - Gaston - 09-04-2017

Konosuba. Comedy series that parodies the "trapped in another world/trapped in mmo". Fucking hilarious.

RE: Suggest me Anime - Jade Harley - 09-04-2017

Polar Bear Café!

RE: Suggest me Anime - Guu - 09-04-2017

@Belle: Yep! Jeff beat ya too it in the chat.

@Trixie: Not seeing it on Crunchyroll, sorry...

@Gaston: Oh yeah, it's that anime with the girl who doesn't wear underwear. I know this because a youtuber I follow used her ass as a thumbnail. Fuckingredflareomg. I may give it a look eventually, it has been put on the list.

@Jade Harley: You know me well.

I added Cowboy Beebop to the list because I haven't watched that yet and I probably should. It's like Citizen Kane, people keep telling me to watch it. Not sure when I'll get to it.

Anyways, tune in later, I'll do a write up about the stuff I watched today!

RE: Suggest me Anime - Guu - 09-04-2017

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon maid (episodes 10-13): Dragon lesbians! So many dragon lesbians! OmG!

I originally avoided this anime because I thought it a harem anime. I watched it when I heard it was a lesbian harem anime. Then I watched it and discovered it wasn’t a harem anime at all.

It was about a human woman and a female dragon, adopting a dragon daughter and living a domestic life.

I am this show’s base. This show is me. Why isn’t there more shows about people building a family? Is the audience for this that small? I guess I should mention, the show does have quite bit situational comedy.

Some downsides though, apparently the manga was way more rique, and elements of that managed to survive into the adaptation. Like a running gag involving an ridiculously big breasted woman interacting with a small boy who thinks she’s a succubus. Not to mention the puppy love arc between 8-year-olds Kanna and Riko go a little far at points (no comment.)

Other than that, love love LOVE this series. I want a series 2. Give me a season 2 KyoAni!

Food Wars (episode 1): WOW, just WOW.

You know, I used to watch re-runs of Iron Chef when I was younger. However, all the American renditions never felt genuine to me. I eventually realized why. The original Japanese Iron Chef wasn’t just a cooking show or just a competition for that matter. In the cooking stadium, food was the most important thing in the world. People fought over it, titles were on the line. It felt like what they were making meant the world.

I remember, this group of japanese purists were furious as Iron Chef Japan for wanting to bring Japanese cuisine around the world. The leader, this guy who looked like a mob boss, would send his students into the ring. The show would literally call them hit men. I remember in the Natto battle against them, he made a natto dessert dish with Coca cola and then chugged the rest of the can right in front of the mob boss chef. I remember one of the hitmen actually won once. They rematched and according to Kitchen Stadium rules, two losses in a row would mean he’d be forced to resign. It was that important.

Food Wars captured that spirit. I made me remember those days watching Iron Chef. Accept here, it gives detailed instructions on how to make the food, something I need to try someday. The potato dish looked supreme!

The foodgasms were funny, but they are also the reason I can’t show this to my mom. She would have loved to watch this otherwise…

I liked how the protag had a fascination with mixing disgusting foods. It established early on that he was an inventor. He wasn’t limiting himself to what he knew worked, he was pushing those boundaries in a quest to find something new, and that lead to the potato based pork roast. He wouldn’t have figured that out if he wasn’t fearless to experiment.

I wish he hadn’t forced that peanut butter and octopus dish on that poor girl though, I didn’t need that tentacle rape imagery…

My Hero Academia (episode 1): I got a huge One Punch Man vibe from this. Kind of like if OPM’s tone was applied to that Sky High movie

I wound up liking the protagonist more than I thought I would. Dunno what endeared me to him. I’d have to do some soul searching

The bully in that show makes no sense. He was trying his damndest to intimidate the protag out of joining Super Hero School. By his own philosophy, quirkless people are inferior and he won’t make it in school. Wouldn’t he want the protag to join? If he fails, that just validates his world views. But the fact he’s trying so very hard to get the quirkless kid to quit tells me he’s somehow threatened, but I don’t understand why. It’s like he knows the kid had potential, but why would he think that?

Also, why would he want to be a superhero to begin with? He’s using his powers on unarmed civilians, he clearly doesn’t want to play by the rules. Either he has unrealistic expectations of superhero life, or everything that motivates this character makes no goddamned sense. I really hope he’s not a regular.

Protag’s history is sad… maybe that’s why I’m endeared?

It’s strange I like the All Right. I don’t go for hyper masculine characters like that, but something about him… this show is going to give me a lot of soul searching time, isn’t it?

RE: Suggest me Anime - Guu - 09-05-2017

(I couldn’t help but see an addition episode tonight, please read above if you missed my thoughts on the first episode.)

My Hero Academia (Episode 2): I am officially in love with this show. I should have watched these two together. The second episode was the show seller!

First off, I didn’t know the bully was a “childhood friend.” Maybe he does believe protag can do it? Is that why he’s threatened? If he’s known him his whole life, he could know protaggy better than anyone.

I think I had this vision in my mind of how this episode would go down. Somehow the kid will obtain a high powered fan and he would use that. I kind of figured he would use his extensive knowledge to save the day somehow. It felt like that was the direction they were going. Boy was I taken aback.

Instead, we get the EXACT OPPOSITE! Instead, we go back to the roots. We go back to why we love superheroes to begin with. Charging forward because someone was in need. Putting everything on the line. It’s something that is lacking in modern superhero movies. The only one I could think of that pulled it off was Wonder Woman when she stepped out into a warzone because she couldn’t stand by while people were in danger. I, like the All Might, was reminded of that.

I owe this series an apology. I spent the first episode summary comparing it to other shit. I didn’t give this show the benefit of a doubt. This was done with love of the genre.

And when the All Might confirmed the protag’s dreams, I couldn’t help but feel incredibly moved. I love the loop around, bringing back the idea that hero stories always start in their school days.

And we end on a confirmation that our protag one day becomes the world’s greatest hero. I don’t see this as a spoiler, it’s a promise of a journey, one I’m eager to go on!

I have to say, I’m looking forward to more of this series! Thank you, all two of you that recommended this, you have good tastes.

RE: Suggest me Anime - homin-Ratione - 09-05-2017

Absolutely everyone here needs to watch Maria the Virgin Witch priority tier 0 defcon 1

RE: Suggest me Anime - Ebonywood Hellscythe - 09-05-2017

Weeb Trash Suggestion Time

Ore, Twintail ni Narimasu (Gonna be the Twin-Tail!!)

I will always stand by my stance of this being a masterpiece. Why have the fetish when you can become the fetish? This is about some dude fighting against evil fetish aliens with the power of twintails. It's kinda dumb.

Kore wa Zombie Desu ka? (Is This a Zombie?)

Admittedly season 2 ends on a mini-cliffhanger. But it's still awesome sauce. Zombies, magic girls, vampire ninjas, what more could you want? Also pretty sure this is on Crunchyroll now. So no excuses.

KonoSuba

2 seasons and possibly more on the way. Good adventure comedy stuff. A parody of the typical "in another world" trope that is becoming all too common. The main character isn't dense or stupid or anything, so

Youjo Senki (The Saga of Tanya the Evil)

If you're not a fan of violence and blood, don't bother. If you don't care for it, but will still watch that kinda stuff, then I'd give this a shot. Magic, WW1 stuff, a competent main character that's also a little girl.

Seriously tho, watch KonoSuba. Youjo Senki is probs the best military type anime for a while. The others were just stuff I found kinda funny 'cause I'm trash.

RE: Suggest me Anime - Amaterasu - 09-05-2017

Some more:
-Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate. Seriously! It has powerful non-sparkly vampires, men and women in uniform (if you're into that), a girl with enormous melons who's actually useful, lots of blood, a cool story... oh, and a scottish priest who wields bayonets and yells exerpts from the bible as he slaughters you. 11/10, would recommend.

-Yu-Gi-Oh. This is not everyone's cup of tea, I get it, but it's not bad at all. Lots of episodes though, so if you want to watch all of them you'll be watching for a while.

-Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night. Waifu King Arthur, need I say more? (Also, they have some friggin' amazing art)

-Azumanga Daioh. Haven't watched it myself, but it's got a floating cat whose voice actor is the same guy that did Anderson in Hellsing.

RE: Suggest me Anime - Ebonywood Hellscythe - 09-05-2017

@Ammy: Isn't Hellsing Ultimate basically Hellsing but better. It's not a sequel or anything as far as I'm aware. Reasonably, you can just skip Hellsing I think. Also, Hellsing Ultimate actually has a good dub imo.

RE: Suggest me Anime - Guu - 09-05-2017

@Homin: Not on Crunchyroll for some reason. Added to "Not on Crunchyroll" list, will consider it if I can find a legal way to watch it.

(Casual reminder to please refrain from linking to pirating sites in this forum, thank you.)

@Ebonywood: Hmmm... well, added all of them to the reserve list.

I reformatted the list in the first post, now it's divided between "Current Queue," "Reserve Queue," "Not on Crunchyroll," and "Completed or Dropped." Keep in mind that the Reserve Queue doesn't mean I WILL watch it, it just means it maybe a possibility. Not on Crunchyroll just means I'd have to find another source to watch it.

(Seriously, don't link to pirating sites on this forum, our server is a bunch of whistleblowers.)

Keep in mind, I reserve the right to drop any series I start, though I'll try to stick with it for three or more episodes as I know not all shows start out strong.

Considering Konosuba has been recommended by two people already, I may consider taking that one as a fourth show. Weighing my options there, three is plenty as it is.

I already have a write up of my thoughts of episode 2 of Food Wars and episode 1 of Polar Bear Cafe. I'll either watch My Hero Academia or Konosuba this afternoon and post all three reviews later tonight. Look forward to it!
