Just another 3rd character indecision thread... - The Humble Sage - 11-20-2017 Because I'm just as indecisive as everybody else, I would appreciate people's suggestions between my final 2 candidates for my third character. Neither Sage nor Skeletor are big faction people, so I want my third character to tie into an organization better, (and also just having a hero character would be nice for a change.) I have compelling reasons and story ideas for both characters, but there are issues with the mechanical side of the writing that make me hesitate on both accounts.
Roy Mustang (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Easily one of the coolest characters from Fullmetal in either the animes or the manga (and given the caliber of FMA's roster that's saying something) Unlike Ed and Al, who I think would to some extent flounder in the Omniverse, given their goals and their reliance on each other, Mustang would be able to adapt to the new setting better, and unlike the Elrics he would be willing to summon his squad of subordinates to assist him. Mustangs whole squad are solid characters and I feel like I could get a lot of mileage out of a coordinated team of people in the Omniverse.![]() To me the biggest issue with writing for Roy Mustang would be the difficulty of writing a PVP encounter with him. Because Flame Alchemy is so powerful, most fights with Roy Mustang either involve him absolutely incinerating anything that gets in his way, or struggling to keep up with foes that can get around his power in some way (either via water or damaging his gloves in some way.) He's just a normal guy, so he doesn't really have all that much in the way of durability either, so writing an extended close fight with him feel difficult. I had the idea of using his squad to help fill out his moveset a bit more, but that feels like it would be overly reliant on assists to be a viable solution, particularly since most of Mustang's attacks are basically Super moves if you look at the source. TL;DR how do I right balanced fights with a guy who is the ultimate glass cannon?
Eowyn (Lord of the Rings)
I think that Eowyn might be my favorite character from the Lord of the Rings (although book Faramir comes close and who doesn't love Aragorn) and I just really liked the culture of the Rohirrim in general. I would love to see a character I love this much in the Omniverse. I personally have been feeling like the Kingdom hasn't been getting a lot of support, and that for being one of the two big factions, they are quite clearly in the number 2 spot, to the point that it feels like Palpatine is lazy more than anything else. Furthermore, seeing how Aragorn would react to a character he personally knows (I would guess... it depends where in his timeline he was pulled from technically...) could provide some interesting insight into the past of the Omniverse in general, similarly to how we were all excited when Jon Snow was gonna be Vader a while back. The mounted combat could also provide some interesting fights, just because we don't have much like that as yet.![]() THE PROBLEM: writing Eowyn in my own writing style feels like it severely weakens the character. This is more an issue to me than I am guessing it would be to other people, but I feel like I would have to some extent mimic Tolkien's style for this character to feel authentic. The thing is I don't know if I can do that anywhere close to reliably, and while I am excited by the concept of someone writing about Omniverse situations in a style like that, I just don't know if I am up to the task. TL;DR I kan't rite gud as Tolkien plx halp! But yes, I would absolutely love writing either of these characters, but I don't know if I can mechanically do what I would need to. People's thoughts and opinions are welcome, I'm mostly just trying to externally process my hesitation for these characters, and I was curious what people's thoughts on the matter were. RE: Just another 3rd character indecision thread... - Handsome Jack - 11-20-2017 Mustang?! Please. Armstrong is best FMA character. Followed by Hughes. Of the two, Mustang would be my choice. RE: Just another 3rd character indecision thread... - Omni - 11-20-2017 I can't comment much on Eowyn, but I got thoughts on Mustang: He's an awesome character and I'd love to see him. But given your opinions, I agree that it's troublesome. Basically, he'd need major changing. Frankly, Enel is similar: he annihilated most people. Roy would realise that his straight-up fire doesn't annihilate people and he'd have to diversity. Flame swords, traps, maybe even using other forms of alchemy (like the more standard stuff, closing off routes and making passageways and such like Ed commonly does) in order to do prolonged fights. ... But yeah, the reason I do an 800 words max default on fight posts is 'cause not everyone's a DBZ character, and a lot of more 'normal' characters REALLY do not suit drawn-out fights. Hell, a lot of anyone who gets bored of writing drawn-out fights. RE: Just another 3rd character indecision thread... - Takanomiya Hijiri - 11-20-2017 Mustang may be an alchemist, but he's a soldier as well, which means having to keep fit, so he'd likely have 2 DEF. That's hardly the ultimate glass cannon. I prefer Mustang, and I reckon it wouldn't be nearly as hard as you think to play him. P.S. The whole squad wouldn't need to be assists; once forces are released you could just buy some of those. RE: Just another 3rd character indecision thread... - Sister Evangeline - 11-21-2017 Might I propose another option ![]() [spoiler] ![]() |
