Sort of Lantern Corps based concept - Gaston - 08-20-2017 So I'm sure you all know of the DC Lantern Corps. The space organisations powered by emotions. To me, though, it seems like they kind of used the actual emotions, in regards to power, too little. Every Lantern Corps felt like they had the same abilities, with minor differences. This is somewhat based off of that, but where the powered are actually based off of the emotion. So to start with, each member of any emotion's group gains increased durability, strength, and speed, but not to superhuman levels. Think ATK, DEF, and SPD of 3, in OV terms. From there, there's the emotional groups, each with special abilities. Here's a list: Willpower-This group gains increased durability, and the ability to shrug off damage (like with survival power in OV). Hope-This group has the ability to power up other people, inspiring them with hope. Compassion-This group has the ability to heal other people. Joy-This group has the ability to fly. Despair-This group has the ability to weaken others, making them filled with despair. Rage-This group gains increased damage, and the ability to fire blasts of energy. Greed-This group has the ability to 'absorb' items. This lets them take an item, make it theirs, and then summon it at will, like a hard-light construct. Logic-This group suppresses their emotions, and gains increased intelligence. So, as you can see, I've changed up the groups and their abilities. I'm thinking of writing short stories about these groups (if I do, they'll be posted in Creative Corner), but would first like to flesh out the list. So, right now I'm trying to think of what should actually give them their powers, some more universal powers, and some more unique powers (especially for joy, logic, and compassion). Anyone have suggestions? RE: Sort of Lantern Corps based concept - Larfleeze - 08-20-2017 I've always been confused why 'Joy' or 'Happiness' wasn't part of the official emotional spectrum in DC. Did they just run out of colors? It seems like a cool idea, but I'm confused about two things: Logic isn't an emotion. It's not even a suppression of emotions. It's just a way of thinking. Emotions can get in the way, but how would someone become less logical by suppressing the emotion of willpower? I'd even say that 'increasing your focus' or 'pushing away other emotions' would both fall under willpower. The second thing is, is this an original concept simply inspired by emotion-fueled Lanterns, or is this your own reboot idea for Lanterns in general? Like, would they still call themselves Lanterns? Are they color-coded? Apparently only Greed can use hard-light constructs. As far as unique powers/universal powers, I like what you have with joy=flight. Peter Pan and all that. But I think super-speed also works well. RE: Sort of Lantern Corps based concept - Gaston - 08-20-2017 I think your idea about them running out of colours was true, since they literally did run out of colours of the rainbow. As for logic, that was one I was kind of debating with myself about. See, I realised it wasn't an emotion, but neither is willpower. They're both states of mind (not sure what they really would be called, best I could think of) The idea was that, in the story's universe, logic people were more anti-heroes; very much so "the end justifies the means," doing things like sacrificing one person to save others. While it's true that those could fall under willpower, so could much of hope. Your third question, the answer is that it is an original idea inspired by the lanterns. The idea is that every member is somewhat like Alan Scott. The objects that give the powers crashed to Earth, created by an alien species, and they used them, not knowing what they were created for. As such it'd be more for street crime rather than intergalactic conflict. They wouldn't call themselves lanterns, because the power doesn't rely on lanterns. The source of power I'm still debating, but I'm mainly considering necklaces, a breastplate, or crystals which embed themselves in the chest of the user. They may be colour coded (if they are it'll be different colours than in DC) or maybe not, I'm still considering. They will all have symbols, though. And Greed's hard light constructs also work differently, as the objects are like normal, they can't be levitated or anything, it's just that they can't be lost or anything (once they're initially acquired). Thanks about the power for Joy, but why do you think Super Speed would fit them? RE: Sort of Lantern Corps based concept - Larfleeze - 08-20-2017 I think willpower is a bad descriptive word, but it's the one DC went with. I think a Green Lantern fuels their power with a combination of determination and focus. The Green Lanterns, I think, are fueled by stubbornness, pride, and courage which I think are emotions. "Willpower" is a catch-all for these emotions. As for joy = Superspeed and flight. When I think happiness, I think freedom. Kind of like the airbenders from Atla? You know, I just feel that a character fueled by hapiness would be carefree, and would have a skill-set that allows them to avoid danger more than anything else. This seems like a really cool idea. Is it for the Omniverse in particular, or just an original story you've been thinking of? RE: Sort of Lantern Corps based concept - Gaston - 08-20-2017 Ah. Although, by that reasoning. Logic, as it is here, is also a combination of emotions. Namely apathy (small degree), a sense of justice, and reasoning (each could be or couldn't be an emotion, depending on who you talk to.) Interesting reasoning for Joy. I like it. Will be doing that, thanks. And no, it's not for the Omniverse specifically, I just started reading GL comics again (partially because of your switch to Larfleeze) and thought to myself "Man. These are all basically the same. Why didn't they differentiate more?" Although it's not for the Omniverse, as I said I will be posting everything here, in the Creative Corner, and I may even bring in characters from this universe as NPCs (or maybe PCs). RE: Sort of Lantern Corps based concept - Larfleeze - 08-20-2017 I'm really into the Lanterns stories as well (as you can probably guess), and there are some differences, each Lantern has a unique power that none of the others do, in addition to the default Flight+Forcefield+Energy Constructs+Teleportation Like, Black - Able to bring the dead back to life (evil) Red - Able to corrupt/poison the constructs of other Lanterns (Except Blue/Violet). Ring alters the mental state to make user exponentially angry. Causes its User to constantly spit burning-hot red super-acid capable of burning through the Constructs of other Lanterns. Most powerful attacking-wise. Orange - Able to assimilate things and convert them into permanent Orange Constructs. Able to drain Emotional energy from the Rings of other Lanterns (except Violet + Blue), both makes its User become exponentially greedy, but also feeds off that greed, allowing the Ring to charge continuously and beyond 100%. Yellow - Power Ring is fueled by the emotions of others, as well as its User. Can recharge from non-emotional energy (i.e. electricity or something else), allows them to learn the fears of any creature nearby. Supereffective against Green Green - Addition of super-advanced Ring AI due to Guardian sponsorship. Blue - Able to recharge other Power Rings, able to increase effectiveness of Green Power Rings, effective against Yellow, supereffective against Orange, supereffective against Red. The constructs created by its user are superweak unless a Green Lantern is enforcing them. Indigo - Able to create portals, able to heal injuries of others, able to channel all other colors of the Emotional Spectrum (OP). Forces its user to become an extremely compassionate person. Violet - Able to create durable and long-lasting physical crystals capable of putting whatever is covered into suspended animation. Makes its user mentally unstable. Red has limited effectiveness, Orange has limited effectiveness. White - Energy constructs that are created become living things in their own rights and keep going, + Brings the dead to life (non-evil version) Supereffective against Black. Either way, if you differentiate it too much, there arise clear advantages/disadvantages, and you have to question why the Guardians would choose Green if it's one of the weakest colors. RE: Sort of Lantern Corps based concept - Desman Black - 08-21-2017 I can answer that last question, it's becurse willpower is the only one of the main seven that doesn't effect the mind of the user... *goes now that he added his 2 cents worth* RE: Sort of Lantern Corps based concept - Larfleeze - 08-21-2017 I don't think Fear or Hope rings do too much to the User's mental state. Sinestro seemed much the same character pre and post weaponers, and what we've seen of Saint Walker before his attaining the first blue power ring shows the same personality. |
