Shio Mora - Shio Mora - 04-16-2018 CHARACTER NAME: Shio Mora CHARACTER SOURCE: Original CHARACTER HISTORY: Quote:Shio hails from the Bleach universe. Shio was born to a family of relatively underprivileged, unexceptional pluses. Uneducated and poor, they spent much of their time simply scraping along. Even from a young age, Shio was expected to contribute, and bring home whatever money he could pick up, to provide for his parents and his family; in reality, most of the money went towards alcohol for his mother and father. However, among his family only Shio put much thought into why they needed to eat. Being dead, things like breathing were considered more of an entertainment than a necessity. Shio himself theorized that even as spirits, they needed some sort of energy to keep themselves alive, much like humans needed energy to survive. However, the energy was used not to support their body, but their souls. Even as a child, Shio was deathly afraid of his parents, and their wrath. He would work and struggle and do everything he could to keep them happy, and as a result was labelled by his brothers as a "suck-up." This led to both physical and emotional abuse, which his parents did little to stop. He was beaten, yelled at, blamed for his brothers' mistakes, and treated horribly for making the rest of his siblings look bad. When Shio turned 50, he finally decided what he wanted to do with his life; he confronted his parents, telling them he was going to become a shinigami. Things quickly turned violent as they accused him of abandoning the family, of getting a swelled head. He lost his parents' favor as quickly as he gained it, and spent much of his time sneaking out to find out more about the shinigami. Each day when he returned, he'd meet worse and worse punishments. His parents would claim any reason at all, but Shio knew the truth; they were afraid, almost offended that he was trying to outdo them. They tried their best to break his will, to keep him close, but when he turned 60 he finally moved out, and into the academy. He had high hopes, and was prepared to work his fingers to the bone to succeed. Unfortunately, life wasn't that simple. In his first year, Shio was by far the brightest student. He would always arrive first to the class, making sure to be as polite and sociable as possible. Many of the other students would make token attempts at conversation, before quickly drifting off. It showed before long, as most of the students would barely scrape by on the exams, while Shio was always first. Quickly, the resentment set in again. The students would begin to poke and prod Shio, always demanding that he make up for making them all look so bad. Still hoping that he could leave his old life behind, Shio would always agree; this typically ended with some crime being committed, and Shio being blamed. This still wasn't sufficient, unfortunately; he continued to progress and keep persevering, always at the top of the class, and always an insufferable teacher's pet. He was on the fast track, already accepted into a division before he had even graduated. This, perhaps, was the last straw for his classmates, as he was one day called to meet with them after classes had ended, well into the night. Under the guise of a 'going away party', Shio was all-but dragged onto school grounds. The following hours were torment, of mind and body to a level he hadn't imagined possible. His comrades lay into him with bakudo and blade, with fist and lash, with every weapon and tool they could lay their hands on. It seemed to go on forever for Shio, leaving him confused and frightened, dragging him back to a life he had thought long surpassed. He was helpless against the onslaught; though he doubtlessly could've defended himself from their blows, all he could do was question himself as to how all of this had happened. Where were the instructors? How was it that the entire class had been able to sneak in here, and get him into this place? His head swam through every event of the last year; every interrupted lecture, every unwarranted extracurricular excursion, every time he'd tracked down an instructor outside of classes to speak to. He'd always been more comfortable around the instructors than around his fellow students, but looking back on it, he couldn't truly be certain if he'd been putting even a single grain of thought on their feelings. Why was it -now- they chose to step up? He'd seen these people, day in and day out, for months. And they were almost unilaterally petty, lazy, and uninspired. And now he could see some of them using healing kido with disturbing efficacy, just to keep him conscious, and hide the evidence. He could see some of them with wickedly sharp glints in their eyes as they swung weapons with a degree of skill he'd never expected. How was it that they were only willing to truly apply themselves to these heinous ends? What had happened to make them so hard to reach? The newly-appointed shinigami left that place battered and broken, moreso left in a haze of confusion than actual pain or agony. He carried with him a heavy air of doubt, a sense that at every moment he was sizing up those around him, as if he were waiting for them to throw a kick at him at the most opportune moment. When he first joined the division he was closed off, reclusive, and uninterested in some of the most genuine examples of human kindness he'd received in some time. After all of this, it almost felt like kindness was wasted on him. It was almost a relief when the hazing began. Good-natured at first; they would simply call him out, demanding he drink glass after glass of sake, or whiskey, or whatever other foul concoctions they'd procured from the human world, or even the Rukongai. The rotgut pained him to drink, left his mouth feeling fuzzy, and the cries of delight almost felt hollow and forced to his jaded ears. So he was almost relieved when they began to spit into the glasses, when they began adding wasabi, mustard, soy sauce, increasingly odd and disgusting combinations that left him in the medical division barracks for a few days. Time passed, and little changed. Shio learned to open up, but to alter the contents of the pages ever so slightly. He likely would've made a perfectly fitting shinigami, if he had stayed in the Gotei. Instead, he woke up in front of a faceless entity, one he had never even met, but seemed to know the contents of his mind near-perfectly. It told him a great deal about the new world he had entered, and the new currency he'd been competing for, but he drowned out all of it. Shio knew one thing about this world, instinctively, without being told. He knew he'd escaped. He no longer had to struggle, or fight, for dubious reasons, and people that he didn't care about. A new start, and a chance for some peace and much-needed rest for a change. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Shio's hair is dark red, roughly shoulder length. He takes great care to make sure that it is presented adequately, but without seeming too showy about it. It's often left uncut, but he's been known to spend hours simply combing his hair. He has dark brown eyes, which are often baggy with sleep circles. Beneath his Shihakusho, Shio dresses in combat-oriented outfits, like the traditional samurai garb, or sometimes army camouflage. The outfits change with his mood, but always identify him as a fighter by nature; he rarely dresses in what he considers 'civilian' clothing, doing his best to make sure everyone knows what he's good for. He'll take great care to keep it clean of course, but it's not uncommon to see large globs of wax over his otherwise clean and pressed outfits, or to see him sauntering through a room with what is undeniably the same outfit as the day before. He seems to have little interest in appearing as refined as most shinigami do, both from his dress and his way of approaching problems. He has an eyepatch over one eye, though there's no actual damage to it; he simply wants to save time for when he enters a dark place. His movements are positively mundane, from his sword swings to his attempts to rush to wherever he's going. He moves without fanfare, yet without a sense of fatige or concern as well; he simply walks along, hardly seeming to pay attention to much of anything while still managing to be faintly aware of going-ons around him. He seems to lack some of the hard-fought discipline most shinigami have, and it shows in his voice. He speaks in a lilting, careful tone that rarely if ever goes above a whisper; even when frustrated, he greets others with an almost singsong welcome, and he is positively incapable of being blunt or rude. He's prone to having pensive expressions far more often than he smiles, as if he's already wondering about some new problem to be tackled even when he's enjoying a cup of tea or just soaking in hot water. He in fact seems to have a chronic issue just appearing happy. He's polite, reasonable, and always gives off a clear air of anxiety or concern. Shio's skin is soft, surprisingly so for a person who spends as much time as him training. He has smooth, relatively tanned skin, and his fingernails are often filed to a very acceptable length...except his thumbs, which have nails almost an inch longer than what would be safe. Shio also keeps his zanpakuto sheathed across his hip, to be pulled out quickly. Besides this, his face and body are clear of blemishes or disfiguring marks. He doesn't even have so much as a birthmark, or a sign of zits. He does, however, have patchy facial hair that grows in when he's been on the job for particularly long. He often has a vaguely sweet, calming scent to him; jasmine or lilac are common, but sometimes it's much harder to place. It almost always comes with some hint of smokiness at the edges, as if he simply bathed in incense or candle smoke. It often makes it easy to identify him, and Shio seems to have little problem being known for smelling nice. He's personally not sure where it comes from, since he doesn't particularly try to make it happen; he just knows every day when he wakes up his hair and skin have some new, pleasant smell attached. STATS: ATK: 2 DEF: 2 SPD: 3 TEC: 3 STARTING PROFICIENCIES: Physical Strength Proficiency- As a shinigami, Shio was extensively trained in both hand-to-hand and swordfighting, making him quite capable of holding his own against wild animals or other soldiers. STARTING POWERS: Suppression- Self-taught to the extreme, Shio has gained a great deal of experience in seeming to be something he's not. He can come across for all intents and purposes as a very typical, unassuming extra character, right up until he's got his blade at your throat. Burst Movement- Called Shunpo in the world he came from, Shio is surprisingly good at this, allowing him to bolt from place to place with little effort. He rarely enjoys using it, besides to guarantee a swift kill against an unprotected opponent. Too many witnesses otherwise. STARTING MOVES: Break and Mend, Taroba! (900) Requires: Physical Strength Shio's weapon, referred to as a zanpakuto, is far more than a mundane sword by most standards. While it has no inherent powers, and is good only for rending flesh in the hands of others, to Shio it contains a reflection of his 'self'. Much the same way that water takes the shape of the container it's put into, Shio poured a portion of his soul and identity into the blade, allowing it to take on an identity separate from himself. By invoking its name deliberately, he can cause it to melt and run, as if it were made of candle wax. It has a visual shape akin to a candle sputtering and running as it burns, starting from the tip and working its way down. In most circumstances, it takes Shio about one second to finish his transformation provided he has focus, and is not making it significantly larger or shorter: To go from a rapier to a longsword to a sabre is relatively simple, and typically can even be done while moving. To compress down or extend his weapon requires more focus though, putting him at about three seconds to finish it if he's uninterrupted, and doing nothing else. This time increases to five seconds if it's an especially impressive change in size, such as from a dagger to a spear, or vice-versa. He can hold on conversations or otherwise attempt to distract people while in the process of changing his weapon, but this can slow the process down further, and if his focus in broken he loses all progress, leaving him with a largely useless lump of wax that he has to shape all over again. Molding the blade requires one hand free, as he shapes it in a way that resembles a potter moving warm clay, or someone molding a candle. Because of this, any time he wishes to change to or from a two-handed weapon such as a spear or a greatsword, he has to remain still during the process. Once the reshaping process s is done, Shio can reform it into other rigid melee weaponry. This can be short (like a dagger), medium (like a sword), or long (like a spear) in length. This process takes up to a second. By efficiently swapping his weaponry from close-range for assassination purposes to mid-range, keeping his opponent at the heft of a spear, Shio is able to deal with opponents with frightening versatility. Each weapon comes with the benefits you'd expect. A larger sword would hit harder, but slower. A dagger would be quicker, but have shorter range, and so on. Another benefit of this move is in Shio's own ability to follow through on his intuition, allowing him to make his weapon more slender or precise, to better slip through the eye slot of a suit of armour, or to maintain distance with someone he doesn't wish to get within arm's reach of. He can alter the form of his weapon as often as he likes, although doing so costs a small amount of energy. At his current power level, none of his weapons can extend a length more than 12 feet from himself, even if he were to move as he were shaping it; any wax that extrudes too far from him simply loses all rigidity and dissolves immediately. Frenzied Swipe (Requires Physical Proficiency) - 300 OM Shio is talented at a great deal of forms of combat, but he excels most notably in the range one would expect from the typical longsword. This move takes about half a second to perform, provided Shio isn't otherwise distracted or fatigued, making it a very good way to finish off opponents who he's leery of giving a chance to prepare whatever nasty surprises they like. Starting from the shoulder and working his way towards his opposite hip, Shio aims to slice his opponent open at the center of mass. There's more force and passion than finesse behind this blow, so it's relatively slow but can smash through most shoddy defenses, making it far wiser to dodge than block. I confirm that I have read and agreed to the Rules of Conduct. Yupyup. Where did you find us? Member Referral. Like, you can have a normal variable move that does this. You'd just need to pay 300 OM for each type of weapon (but it wouldn't cost SP to use so you could change your sword whenever you want). Also... you wouldn't be able to use this without a normal move for the actual sword or weapon in the first place before you could use the super to change it. Ikkotsu: Up to 5 seconds to analyse a target, and then 1 second to punch 'em hard after that. Seems good. I think you're selling your strength short though. Really, if it's a straight forwards strike, it should be a fairly solid blow. Frenzied Swipe: This looks good. Remember to add in your move costs, so this would be 300 OM, as would Ikkotsu. The rest of your joining app looks good, and welcome to the Omniverse! Who referred you, by the way? There's an OM bonus to them for doing so. RE: Shio Mora - Shio Mora - 04-16-2018 Thanks, Dane! It's great to be here today, with you all. I was referred by everyone's favorite snarky wizard, Harry Dresden; already specified it in the paperwork as applying. As for the utility power, my basic thought process was as such: Shio is meant to be -dizzyingly- competent in mixed combat, allowing him to change his fighting style with little hesitation. He subscribes to no single martial art or fighting style, meaning if he's fighting an especially clever opponent, he can immediately disrupt their flow of combat, and continue his relatively unimpeded. It seemed like it would be a little too prohibitive to add a new move for each weapon I wanted, but that's largely contingent on what qualifies as a 'new weapon'; if we're treating spears and lances and fauchards as three separate weapons, then I'd be doing basically nothing but making new weapons, and then I'd have tons of SP and nothing to -spend- it on, unless I'm missing something. Provided I could make 'hub' forms for the basic obvious ones, perhaps in a manner akin to Pathfinder logic, I could easily swap over to a series of nebulous forms. The intent was, quite simply, for Shio to 'make' items without spending OM, without explicitly breaking the rules of how creating items normally worked. In this case, I could even see it working as some sort of special version of the Transformation and Shapeshifting proficiencies, as time went on and he got even more skilled. Ikkotsu's primary intent was speed over force, so I -did- undersell the damage a bit because I wanted to make it clear that if the opponent decides to try and get involved -after- he's had the time to build his stance, they're going to find it a lot harder to deal with. The intent was that anyone who gives him five or six seconds in a fight, just to see what happens, is going to find that to be a big mistake. I was referred by everyone's favorite snarky wizard, Harry Dresden; already specified it in the paperwork as applying. You only have 1sp per level. As an example, my character Dane has been here for about a year and he's level 6. So he has 6sp. I spend that on powerups (increased stats for a short period of time), super attacks (sp moves that do a lotta damage), super defences (sp moves that block the strong attacks), and a utility (getting to do a bunch of teleports really fast). To put it simply, 1sp to change the shape of your weapon to anything you want is kinda... eh. Especially since you can only do it once per sp used. I personally wouldn't mind letting you spend 1sp to change your weapon to anything you want, as often as you want, for a full round of combat. Otherwise, it'd be a fairly weak effect. And you'll probably want to use your sp for something else. SP is typically more valuable than your OM. And, honestly, I don't know if that'll fly. Because it basically seems like a way to cheat your way past spending OM. Super moves are more about enhancing your capabilities than getting something you can do with normal moves but for less OM. If you're certain that you definitely want it as a supermove, I'll ping a more senior staffer for you. But I would highly advise you try and get it as a normal move. Or maybe just pick a couple of weapons that you want to start with and upgrade it to include more later. Regardless, if you do get the super utility, you would need a basic sword move or something so you can have a weapon to spend SP on and change in the first place. Anyway, you could probably get most straight, rigid melee weapons you want without spending too much OM. I'll double check with some other staffers, but if you give me a short list of your 'main' weapons, I'll see what I can do. Also, for Ikkotsu, you did say it still takes a second to execute, which is enough to warrant more damage than a hard push. Unless I'm missing something. RE: Shio Mora - Shio Mora - 04-18-2018 I understand all the mechanics of how SP works, and how levels work. I understand that the swapping mechanic as-is is fairly underwhelming, but I wanted to keep things simple, more than anything. I know very little about the unspoken precedents as to how flexible a single move can be; I just wanted to save time and stress for everyone by not adding a new weapon form every week ad nauseum. For now, I'll reorient my moves to have a few distinct forms, and try to describe them in a suitably open-ended way such that I don't have to worry about needing a new form in a week. A flail and a morningstar -should- be similar enough, mechanically and logically, that I wouldn't need two separate moves for each. That was my primary concern, in terms of keeping my first character streamlined and easy to progress. I'll try my best to have an edit up within 24 hours. That was my primary concern, in terms of keeping my first character streamlined and easy to progress. I spoke to some other mods, and, yeah. You can't have a super move to game your way past spending OM in this way. The general precedent for variable weapon moves lies with Thaal's move, here (he's inactive now): Hard-Light Weapons – 900 OM (Requires Physical Strength) Sinestro can create melee weapons from Hard-Light in most forms that a melee weapon can come in. These can be short (like a dagger), medium (like a sword) or long (like a spear) in length. The more energy he puts into these weapons, the harder they are to break but the more physically and mentally exhausted he becomes. These weapons will immediately dissipate upon his breaking his concentration for any reason. So, basically, you could easily have something similar. Like (I've tried to copy your wording as best as I can here): Break and Mend, Taroba! (900) Requires: Physical Strength Shio's weapon, referred to as a zanpakuto, is far more than a mundane sword by most standards. The 12ft size cap is because 12ft is the furthest you can hit without ranged prof. But, this should pretty much let you have any reasonable melee weapon. It looks wordy since I kept in your description. Just note that you'd need an additional move, or need to make changes if you wanted to get ranged weapons, or throw something you make with this. You're also not going to be able to make it into a shield, nor a whip or anything whip-like (to swing it at someone's leg and trip them up). This is just for rigid-stuff like a glorified weird-shaped stick. But not a flail or set of nunchucks, or anything with chain - really. You'd need another move for stuff like that. RE: Shio Mora - Shio Mora - 04-19-2018 Perfectly fine with me! I already took the liberty of swapping it around such that I spend my OM instead of SP on the weapon swaps. My initial concern was just to make my first character simple, but if there's precedent already that's not as much of an issue. In any case, I already made a few suitable weapon forms for now. I'll add some more as I do stuff. RE: Shio Mora - Dane Regan - 04-19-2018 (04-19-2018, 12:32 AM)Shio Mora Wrote: Perfectly fine with me! But, due to how the moves system works, you will actually need to include all of your weapon forms under the same variable move. Same object, same move. You should also clarify any time constraints for changing the form of the weapon, and keep in your rough description of what it looks like when he changes the weapon. RE: Shio Mora - Shio Mora - 04-20-2018 As you wish. I'll do my best to have it finished within the last 24 hours. RE: Shio Mora - Shio Mora - 04-22-2018 Aaaand edited! You're just swinging your sword, and there's nothing here that you can't do with a normal sword swing. A less accurate but hasty and strong swing is something you can do normally. So... you can just write him doing this. You could add a charge time or something and have it be like a power attack if you wanted, or emphasise that it will almost always (or usually, depending on stats) push its way through conventional defences (i.e. by knocking a sword to the side) in exchange for being slow or inaccurate or leaving Shio open or something. So, for now, I've removed it from your roster. I'll leave this thread open for a while so you can discuss any changes you might want to make to that move. Anyway, I'll get you approved now.
