Possible Bonus OM Request Thread replacement - Crocodile - 01-09-2017 I had a thought. I think it might help with the... work involved in graded threads for Bonus OM. Next to every post, the account name has a "Reputation" counter. You can use this to give a positive review of a post, yeah? But not for your own posts. Just for others. I was thinking it might be simpler to just give out OM to people when their posts get a positive review. Making it a flat rate would save counting words, and a Staff Member could give a Neutral review on the character when the OM was updated (assuming we couldn't get an automated system for it). I hope that wasn't confusing... I'm not feeling particularly articulate right now. Just wanted to air this out and see what other folks thought. RE: Possible Bonus OM Request Thread replacement - Mark - 01-09-2017 Moved this to Discussion since it's a discussion of an idea rather than an update/edit. The problem I have with this is that it sorta puts tiny posts and huge posts on the same level of gain, which feels cheap to people who write a ton and easily exploitable for people who want to just write quick things and upvote themselves and such. RE: Possible Bonus OM Request Thread replacement - Crocodile - 01-09-2017 Yeah. Obviously up voting yourself would need to be done away with. As for quick posts vs big... I can see your point. But those who write large posts are already gaining enormous amounts of OM in comparison to the short ones. And hopefully by cutting out voting for oneself, you shouldn't need to worry about poor posts being a cheap source of OM. Another option would be to use Upvoting as a "marker" that staff could use to review a post and award it additional OM based on the number of votes on that post. RE: Possible Bonus OM Request Thread replacement - Jade Harley - 01-09-2017 I was under the impression that the rating system should be* more for.... y'know, being nice, telling someone when you think they've done a good job, and maintaining some good community morale. Like a glittery sticker, nice to look at but nothing much beyond that. I'm.... not exactly sure how we could make it work in the way you're suggesting, since staff isn't really notified when people leave positive reviews on a post? Ehh, I don't really think the notion that someone has done a ton of work therefor they get a smaller reward is fair. I know that's not directly what you're saying, but it's the end result. I'd compare it to olympic athletes getting consolation trophies while the medals go to those who work slightly less hard. Doesn't really seem like a system that would motivate me to do better. EDIT: I don't want to seem like I'm shitting on the idea, I definitely appreciate the thought going into a system that saves work! RE: Possible Bonus OM Request Thread replacement - Crocodile - 01-09-2017 It probably is supposed to be used for that. I was just trying to brainstorm an idea for automation of awarding bonus OM. The Reputation counter seemed like it could work with some tweaking, but I'm really not an expert on it. Like I said in chatbox, the more automated we can make things, the more time staff will have to review posts for setting or rule breaks, take care of player issues, approve join posts and moves, and generally just build on the site. Out of everything you guys do, this seemed the easiest to streamline. But, like I said, I ain't an expert at this. I'm sure there could be a way to make it more "fair". RE: Possible Bonus OM Request Thread replacement - Mark - 01-09-2017 So long as it's fair to everyone, I think automated system would be awesome. I'm always down for ways to improve efficiency. Regarding the rating system, it kinda seems like looking for new upvotes would kinda work the same as nominating a thread does now? I could be entirely misunderstanding it, though. In both systems there would be something to notify that a thread was voted as worthy of a bonus and both would require action to change OM along with a log edit. The only difference would be how the bonuses are decided. If we could somehow fix the broken word counter that the site uses and have it spit out word counts for us and generate log posts with a button, that would be perfect. Not totally sure if that is a doable thing, but I'd love to see it. RE: Possible Bonus OM Request Thread replacement - Crocodile - 01-09-2017 Me too. I'd also like to see a system where a post of greater quality would give more bonud OM than lesser quality one of similar word count Doing it post by post with a system like this would also save ya from having to read like 10k words in one sitting. |
