Is it possible to form a town of secondaries? - Jams Bolero - 05-09-2016
I want to ask people to help participate in a town of secondaries who survive through helping one another. It's an attempt to simulate that old small town feeling where everyone relied on each other, and I wanted to know if it's possible to start a town like this in the Endless Dunes. I am fully aware it'd be difficult considering... well, it's the Endless Dunes. But I feel it'd be an interesting attempt to take a different perspective of the Omniverse, to switch from the perspective of a single immortal prime to a town full of secondaries trying to survive.
So yeah, would it be possible to do that?

Do you mean like have Jams go there and create it himself? If so, it would take quite a while depending on how large you'd want it to be. Nippur (New Babylon's headquarters) for example had what amounted to a town's worth of people and that took a pretty long time to create. It would probably go a bit faster with a few other people, but it's not something that would pop up overnight regardless.
If you'd rather have him/they stumble upon one, I'd think there are probably a handful of unnamed/unrecorded settlements throughout the Dunes. It's a huge place after all and it's not unthinkable that a handful of people might set up some shelter together. If you wanted to bump into a place like that, I see no problem with it.
By participate, are you meaning like make it into a story event in the Dunes?

What it would be is a town of secondaries in the dunes trying to build a town near an oasis or a river that they happened to find, or perhaps have irrigated crops or something. The scenery would be relatively desolate, with maybe a cactus here or there and a tumbleweed passing by, but mostly just dust for miles. Buildings are made of wood, brick and stone, and everyone has some job to help contribute to the town.
Basically, this would be a pet project of mine and a few friends where we try to gather some secondaries and create a notable small town. One people can recognize, but not one too large to capture that old town feel that died with the advent of the internet. Not sure if this would be fine, since the Omniverse IS about the adventures you go on with primes primarily... er, wait, mostly. But I just wanted to know, I've wanted to know what it'd be like if some secondaries were so determined to live a normal life that they'd build their own town with their own currency and what not because having primes do this stuff for them would be unrealistic.

So you're wanting to grab a few buddies and RP a small settlement of Secondaries going about their daily lives? I'd think that would be fine. People do NPC work all the time. Just keep the numbers manageable for storytelling reasons.
Are you thinking of this as just a little one-off project or are you thinking of getting this added to the Verse as a permanent staple?

It really depends on how into it we get. Maybe it'd be a permanent staple if it works out really well! But most likely, it'll be a one-time thing that MAY get an occasional mention every decade or so.

If you needed other writers in order to make the town seem like it breathes, I'd be willing to help out. Like Mark said its going to take time, regardless if a Prime where to create it or just the gathering of Secondaries within the Dunes. It might be easier for the Staff to manage if One or Two NPCs were made and submitted for site use. Then those NPCs could be the driving force behind the settlement. Until, over time, it became a small town.
Would this work Mark?

I'd say the answer would be that you're free to start writing about the town and then if you feel it's getting big enough, that topic can be broached. I can't really give a definite answer beyond that, as it will depend on how 'big' (both as an idea and in population) the town gets. I'd say drop a topic in the Omniverse Discussion forum and see who is interested first, though.
As for Staff Participation, that'd be voluntary for whoever among staff would want to write with your group. Beyond Omni himself, there are not that many (none that I can think of, though I'm sure I'll be corrected) Site NPCs that are controlled solely by anyone in particular.
