[NPC] The humdrum life of a castle guard (Mature) - Eda - 08-24-2016
Mina was a simple girl with a simple life , the daughter of a simple farming family had made her way to castle guard faster then most people would . Her still young age back at that time was one that had many people question if she was good enough , if she could handle the task at hand . It was indeed a task she handled well , having been doing it for three years already . With many more to come so long as she stayed healthy , however it was not without its costs . Life in Camelot was simple really , besides royal affairs and the occasional rabble that is . She knew war was a very real thing as well , though she really did not see the value in fools throwing their lives away trying to take the city . She was guarding the gate to the city on this particular day , an easy enough task . Nearly silent as the four guard team at east gate ate their lunches , she was never much of a talker so the other three laughed and talked about whatever . Her own mind seeming to wander , to focus on other things . She would be going on her first ever date soon , something she was building anticipation for .

Her day continued on like any other , people came and people went . She was sure this was the life , though this month she might be a little short on funds . Checking the local quest boards she found a few that would be easy for someone like her to take on , small things that needed done around the town . She did not wish to overexert herself after all , not that she was the lazy type . Hardly such a thing , she just did not want to incur injury . She went about completing the simple tasks , rewarded with enough money to carry her over until payday came . The life of a guard was a simple one indeed , and one she very much enjoyed living . Though often she felt like something was missing , she longed for another strong opponent to show up .

Another uneventful day had her lamenting to herself , wondering just when her strong opponent might finally show themselves . She had even entered her name to be matched up with a potential strong opponent . It was already beginning to get dark too , the sounds of the night filling her ears . The bards going in for the night so the only sounds being the night birds , crickets , locusts , they made a music of their own though . One she was more fond of then the off key and often out of tune lute players in the town .
She silently made her way to a rooftop , unfurling a bedroll . Night duty was always pretty easy , and she made a habit of laying awake watching the stars . Her ears tuned to any unusual sounds , she could pick up a thief or stalker if they decided to get frisky . They were always such noisy types , rarely was there ever a truly stealthy one . Those who boasted the loudest on the stealthiness amused her somewhat , perhaps a rouge or a vagabond might be her worthy adversary . A thought for a later time she mused , for now she would focus on her duty . The humdrum life of a castle guard she figured , something many a person would find to be glamorous . She would tell them it was quite the contrary , most days were rather ordinary .
Her skilled ears picked up some movement , getting to her feet to see what was going on . Seeing an unusual gathering not far from the castle , she kept her eyes on it . Wondering just what they were up to , however she would remain quiet . Watching and listening to confirm they were suspicious , she would not want another incident like last time . They still had not found the barmaid or the apple dumplings from that one .

As her luck would have it , the group was just some rabble that was kicked out of the local tavern for being too drunk . She shook her head softly walking to the other side of her post , again it was nothing special to see . A few traders were out later then normal , but nothing suspicious in nature . She lamented how mundane this could be sometimes , keeping her eyes peeled now for anything that should not be going on .
Her attention perked to full when four people on horseback made for the front gate , the guard patrol was rarely making for the outside routes this early . It made her wonder if some bounty had been issued , if four of what they called the primes had taken a quest of some kind . Her eyes focused on the group that was leaving , one of them in particular seeming very strong indeed . She would make a note of that for later .
The rest of the night would pass without incident , her shift changing when dawn's light broke . Making her way back home to sleep off the long night shift , deciding to get cleaned up first . Her messy crimson locks needing a good washing as well , as tired as she was she knew tomorrow night would be more of the same . She doubted anything would come up that would merit her interest or notice , for now however she needed to sleep .

After a good mornings rest she would have guard duty again once more , however the early hours of that were of rare interest . Three of the four who left the night prior had not returned , leading to a search for them to be launched . She was on the search team , going out to the area just around the city . She found the horses they left on , all three abandoned and footprints leading deeper away . Deciding to follow them , she would see a wondrous sight indeed , a fight between three fighters of an incredibly high level . Her eyes wide was she watched the three way trio , attacks of all king thrown around . The three of them must have agreed to a fight , and she had the distinct pleasure of getting to watch them now . These three were of an incredible level too , she wondered if one day she too might possibly become so powerful .

Mina kept her emotions well hidden , disappointed in her own match up but knowing they would arrange something eventually . Tonight was a special night though , considering the princess herself had been matched up with some prince from a far away land . She had the task of guarding the outside of the prestigious Bonbon Sunshine's chamber , she found herself pacing slightly . Speaking only when spoken to , just a glimpse of the princess might make her explode though . When she got the job the two had spoken briefly , well more the princess welcoming her to the guard force . However ever since she got all fluttery at mentions of her , something she still did not understand in the slightest . Keeping her responses calm and simple for the time , knowing the princess was preparing. Not wanting to disturb her too much , her voice a bare whisper in wishing her good fortune .

Mina could not believe last night even happened , she had gotten to speak with the princess in person . Though she had been quite vocal with her , embarrassed herself . Made a blushing fool of herself in front of the woman , she had been rewarded for her bold words and action . Wearing the necklace she was gifted proudly , and making many of the guards silently question her . Though not a single one of them seemed to come out with their thoughts , she also had a favorable duty again . Tending to the lower halls of the castle , it was a mostly quiet night again at least . So it seemed if you discounted the castle maids cleaning , the cooks baking for tomorrow and the like . She found herself touching the treasured item now and again , her heart dancing just a bit . That odd feeling from before sweeping over her body , she decided it was indeed nerves . She was nervous , wondering to herself if she might ever get another chance to speak with the princess again . Hoping to herself that she would be able to , her head held high and her eyes focused on scanning the mostly empty hallways . What she did not know is tonight was going to be one of the hardest nights of her life , and that what was going to unfold might end up changing her fate forever

There was someone in the castle who did not belong , how had they gotten past the other guards . A thought for a later time , she had to focus and deal with them . This armed male who had one of the castle staff with a blade pointed at them , she rushed for the male to stop them . Finding herself thrown back suddenly by a blast of wind , her eyes narrowing . This man could use magic ? , he was also using it for evil too . This was decidedly not allowed in Berry Blitzkrieg , she made another move against them . Narrowly dodging a second blast , her axe taking one of their arms .
" Surrender or face summary execution by my axe "
When the now disarmed assailant continued to fight she did what she had to , silently and quietly . Wordlessly slaying the criminal , her eyes showing no emotion . The maid in question having run off screaming to get more of the guards , Mina silently disposed of the remains of the intruder . Even made to clean up the mess it had made , much unaware of the eyes that were on her . That someone had seen the exchange that had taken place just now .
She shook her head getting a feeling this long night was far from over , that something huge was about to take place .

Within a few seconds of the one that had shown three more assailants made themselves known , but Mina could hear fighting all through the castle . The entire kingdom was under siege , she would not allow such a thing . She continued to fight bringing two of them down with relative ease , however the third made it past her . She was quick to turn on her heels and make chase , the pointed spear tip on her pole arm becoming useful . Landing a critical blow on them before they got too far , now making for the top floor . She knew the princess would be able to hold her own , however she did not want to risk such a thing .
She fought her way through a mob of them , seeming to shrug off every hit she was taking . Save for one in particular , getting body checked clean through a supporting pillar . It took her a solid minute and a half to get up from that hit , her entire body aching from it . She would keep fighting though , a sense of dread coursing through her body . Three of her ribs were broken , however she did not care about that . Her focus was fighting her way up to the princess , she made her way through the attackers . Getting even more roughed up along her path , coughing up a bit of blood .
There were just too many of them though , she blocked an attack meant for another one of the guards . She could feel her legs nearly give out from the strength behind it , this assailant was nearly ten feet tall!!! . Humans did not grow to that size to her knowledge , the fighter was clad in all green plate armor with an Orcish insignia . Clearly the one leading this coup against her precious homeland , but how had he gotten into the kingdom . Past all of the guards even , past the soldiers ?
Questions she would not have time to ask as his next swing sent her flying down a hallway and into a wall , a hit that would even send most fresh primes reeling . She was in a bad way and knew it , every muscle and bone in her body hurt . Somehow though she pulled herself to her feet , blood running down her pretty face . Her clothing tattered and torn , her undergarments slightly exposed by the damage to her armor and attire . Her left arm was also decidedly broken , she could not even feel it at the moment .
She had one chance to survive this , failure was not an option . She had to do something that might get her hung , she was only a secondary . She had hidden what she was truly capable of , focusing all of her remaining strength to one point in her body . She made a mad charge for the gigantic beast , her eyes focused on the target . Her shallow breathing hitched in her chest , her armor clad boots clicking on the stone floor beneath her . The hallway blurred to her vision , only one target in her eyes .
It made a massive swing of its sword , her already useless left arm thrown up to block it . She did not scream , she did not even flinch . Her counter-strike was a stroke of brilliance . Using the spear tip of her pole-axe right into one of the eye holes of the beasts armor , pushing it through the other side through sheer force of will .
Her primal scream when she connected was something that every invader took notice of , as she brought the thrust into a full swing . Ripping the head clean off of this vile beast .
" VILE INTERLOPERS !! FLEE IN TERROR OF THE MIGHT OF OUR KINGDOM .. RUN NOW AND BE SPARED THIS DAY .. ELSE YOU FACE EXECUTION OF YOUR ENTIRE TRIBE AT THE EDGE OF MY BLADE!!! "
It was a bluff , but an effective one . She had nothing left , barely even able to stand . The invading force pushed back now by the rallying guard with the princess leading them , though her own victory was not unnoticed . The princess had seen and heard what she had just accomplished , one of the invaders leaders fell to a low ranking guard . However it would not be without a price .
Mina was a secondary and thus , unable to regenerate from injuries as quickly as a prime could . She had also incurred a potential career ending injury , a stump of an arm where her left arm once was . Four of her ribs were also broken , both of her legs , and one of her eyes was experiencing some blindness currently . Her breath escaped her ruby lips , and sleep suddenly took her . Taking a fall face first onto the stone floor in front of her .

Less than two days was all it took for her to be on her feet and back to work , though her repaired arm was currently wrapped up and still quite sore . The rest of her injuries would heal in time , she would not let such trivial things slow her down . Though everyone else insisted she take it easy for a few weeks , she was already training to rehab the injuries .
Those around her could be convinced sometimes she wasn't a normal secondary , could be persuaded she was hardly a normal human . Her incredibly high drive to succeed making some whisper of being a woman possessed , her new position too lit a fire in her belly . She wanted to prove to everyone that the reason for it was hardly favoritism . She would not let herself sit idle while the other guards got ahead of her in terms of strength .
Knowing that the princess was well had also contributed to her current mood , that she had been critical in saving not just her . She had been the reason so many survived the fighting , it drove her to a new level . Pushed her beyond anything she prior imagined possible , to think just a month ago she was under the radar . A fresh faced recruit that no one paid any notice , she would not let herself fall under that radar ever again .

She felt herself reach the point of exhaustion quickly though , her left arm still a bit slow to respond . However it seemed like it would make a full recovery given enough time , her eyes narrowed when she looked at the castle . Knowing she was ordered to take time to heal and recover , though a large part of her did not wish to .
She slowly rose to her feet , her legs still an incredible source of pain for her . Though both were hardly fully healed , if she did not stop she might injure herself worse . This is something she knew , however she could not shake the feeling in her stomach . This time it was not nerves , she had a feeling she knew just what it might be too .
Had they missed one , had one of the attackers from a few nights prior hidden out in the castle somehow . Impossible ! , there was no way that could be the case . She knew the guards would sweep every inch of the castle , and most of them had insight . They would see through any disguise with ease , unless it was someone who was in the castle all along ...

Hurt and tired as though she might be , she made her way to the castle swiftly . Two of the guardsmen on the outside gate were out cold , sleeping to most eyes . However she knew this from seeing it in her training , the fine dust on their armor . This was sleeping powder , sprinkled finely through their meal no doubt . That had to be an inside job then , she made her way as quickly as her throbbing body would let her . Finding that even the higher ranking guards were stricken by this , wasting no time she made her way upstairs .
There was that dark and ill feeling again , someone she did not know was slowly making their way through the hallway . Whistling even as if showing off at the fact they would not be caught , judging by the bags they were carrying . They had managed to get into one of the treasury vaults before hand . She would not allow such a foul man to carry out anymore crime in her beloved home , though she was without a weapon having broken her prior one in the fight . She used her quickness to her advantage to tackle them to the ground , the gold bags skidding across the ground .
Crimson hues stared down at the thief unblinking , her fist the last thing they would see before being bound up and hand delivered to the commander . The commander scolded her some for coming back before she was healthy though , but also under her breath praised her for thwarting this fiend .
She shook her head slightly speaking clearly for the first time in a while .
" I might lack the abilities others have , but I keep sensing something . A dark aura hanging over the kingdom , and each time I sense that cloud . Something like this seems to happen "

Mina would have to take the next few weeks off to heal , a source of much irritation to her . Her patience and devotion made it so that this was the most painful part of healing , the pain itself did not bother her terribly . She silently wished for another chance to meet the princess , once more speak with her . Perhaps with any luck her wish would be granted , she did not use the time she had idle though . Since the odd feeling had seemed to fade she used her time to train , her wish to become even stronger .
She silently and patiently waited for her body to stop aching and hurting , to be ready to face her next challenges . Unaware that her first day back would be one of the hardest days of work she ever put in .

In one day she had managed to break up no less then five fistfights , the same two idiots all five times as well . Two of the lower ranking guards just really not liking one another , apparently one of them was flirting with the maids . The other disliked this action and decided to make it a brawl for her honor . Mina happened to know that maid had no more honor then a lady of the streets , seeing her trot along with a third male . Rolling her eyes ever so slightly at that , then again it was her break . She could do as she wanted on her break , nothing illegal there .
She leaned against a pillar listening to someone talking a few rooms over , ears trained on the chatting . It seemed some important king was going to be visiting soon , that the guards would be on high alert . She was more than ready for such a thing , shaking the cobwebs of her prior time off out .

Her stress through working a longer then normal shift seemed to ebb away though when she heard the commander praising her efforts , it made the entire ordeal worth while . Her head tipped back for a bit once she stepped out onto the balcony , looking up to see the beautiful stars and how they seemed to be smiling down on her . Though her trained eye caught an unusual pattern in the clouds , it was going to storm soon . Lightning dancing through the clouds , she closed the outside windows to prevent the rain getting in . Shaking a thought away , she doubted a storm was some sort of bad omen .

Mina did not see the humor in one of the jesters that followed this all important visiting noble , the light hearted humor totally going over her head . Though she found herself wondering what kind of king traveled with a funny man , and two bards . However she could not see any guardsmen , they were either confident or they were stupid . She doubted they would last long at that rate , narrowing her eyes when she saw it was a young man . Very young indeed , this supposed king was yet a child . Pushing her hair from her face she took point in guarding their advance , not wanting to risk a possible attack .

The would be prince or king seemed to talk with the princess for some time , causing her to wonder just what was going on . During this meeting her dataverse device updated , word of a possible adventure for secondaries like her were welcome to attend . Her eyes widening at the idea , remembering the last lot that tried that . The most skilled of whom made it to Omni and became primes , she added her name to that list . Knowing that was a chance of a lifetime

Once the matter of the visiting noble was resolved she was thankful to return to the normal quiet day , her once combed back hair now made messy again by her own design . After all it was her signature look , she openly admitted to herself to prefer to look a little bit distracted . It made her opponents not expect her to be a credible opponent and all , it was one of her strongest weapons . One she made incredibly effective uses out of , though she found herself on a shift alone for the first time in a while . Her fingers brushing the gift the princess gave her , a slight red hue tinting her cheeks . Surely she couldn't be blushing , could she ?
Deciding to check for herself she found she indeed was , since the night was a quiet one she let her mind wander a bit . Going to some thoughts that were starting to build in her mind , thoughts that in the future she might come to regret .

Mina could not believe she had just done that , her hand shaking and nearly dropping her dataverse device . She had managed to hide her Ip address and even not sign her name , however the entire thing came off creepy and stalker like . It had not been her intent to seem that way , and now it was out there for everyone to read . There was no way to delete or remove the message she had posted , her heart slamming and sinking in her chest . What if the princess found out it was her , what if all of Berry Blitzkrieg was reading it right now . These questions danced inside of her head , she steeled herself though . If she was to be punished for her feelings , she would accept it as simple as that . She resolved herself to let those words remain visible , finding pride that she was brave enough to even write them . Thankful that no one was around to see that she was the one to write it , convincing herself that no soul would ever know it was her

She kept her head held high through the quiet shift , the sun starting to peak through the window letting her know shift would change . She quite literally would tag out to the guard who had day shift , she had the faintest of smiles . It seemed at least no one was aware of the folly that took place , perhaps no one would figure it out after all .
She made her way to her quaint little home in the city , most businesses just starting to open for the day . With her new rank she would not need to take a side job unless it was something that suited her . It brought joy to her to know her future was secure , that if she continued to excel she would be rewarded .
Her mind wandered to a thought while she did her weekly shopping , picking up food and personal supplies she would need . She returned to her simple home , the three rooms that were her life outside of work . She wondered for just a few moments if she was a bore , if she was so simple that it made her unlikable .
She eventually perished the thought , deciding she smelled unpleasant and needed to clean up properly . She slowly unfastened her armor , piece by piece . Then her dress under it pooled at her feet , making a note of the scar that now tattooed her left arm . She would wear this as a badge of honor until the day she breathed her last , she promised this out loud to the mirror in front of her .
Once she had finished making such a vow her undergarments were the last to be remove , she found herself musing on purchasing something sexier . However she quickly threw that thought away as well .
" When would I ever have a chance to wear it ? "
She turned her water on as hot as she could tolerate it , letting the steam rise for a few moments . Taking the time to evaluate her looks . She was hardly obsessed with herself like some women , but it was nice once in a while to compliment herself . Today it had to be the smile she could not seem to pry away . It would take an act of god to remove it , she could easily be convinced of that .
She carefully stepped into the water , her head tipped up to let it purify her thoughts for a few moments . Deciding to push her hair back to wash it later .
Unaware of the ongoings just outside of her home , or that she was about to have a very long day .
