Water Walking - Schwi Dola - 11-20-2015

Why is Water Walking 300 OM to have?

Its RP fodder. If someone was a Merman he'd float at the surface effortlessly and move through the water effortlessly for what would be a technical advantage to someone that can't. Anyone could, and anyone can breathe underwater and summon apparatus to do so without approval. Why would water walking be different?

Re: Water Walking - Tom Marvolo Riddle - 11-20-2015

Well its more than just water walking. In a lot of ways you can use the Chakra Walking technique to get to areas you normally couldn't unless you had flying advanced climbing skilz. At least that's my interpretation.

Re: Water Walking - Schwi Dola - 11-20-2015

So that particular move has more functions than just water walking like opposing gravity. (multiple functional move) I'm more specific about Water Walking here.

Its not a personal concern but I just wanted to ask when I saw it. Desco had to buy levitate but that is some feet off the ground and in the air.

Ah we are just talking water walking alone. Hrm. Yeah I can see where fodder comes up until you have a person who can manipulate water as well. But really that'd be no different having a land walking fodder and going up against someone who can move earth. So... no clue.

Re: Water Walking - Minato Namikaze - 11-20-2015

Water walking has distinct advantages over a lot of things, sure, if you can get to a point where you can run over water without falling in... unless you stop moving, but water walking allows you to walk on water as if it was a hard surface.

Also, you have to think about it in ways that aren't going to be fodder, using this in the middle of a fight to escape someone's assault would be a huge advantage, and to just be given that ability for free? No way.

Re: Water Walking - Undyne - 11-20-2015

I agree that Water Walking should be a move if you can use it in any way that gives you a distinct advantage - as in fighting scenarios, a base assault or what have you.
In Arthuria's case, if she can walk on the lake water to get her sword - and really, the only alternative would be swimming, which would not have any major difference - but outside of that single occasion she needs to swim around to cross bodies of water, I personally wouldn't mind.

Maybe there's something special to the lake that's responding to her?

Re: Water Walking - Schwi Dola - 11-20-2015

And anyone can breathe underwater if they want to and breathe in space if they want to. This isn't the only thing granted by default that is a technical advantage to someone who chooses not to have a way to do it.

This is to say that anyone could summon some shoes to do it for you as well. If thats in flavor for you. That is the counter to other people not being able to breathe in water or space. Anyone can swim, a clear advantage against people that cannot. Desco isn't very good at it, she just floats in the air instead.

Terrain isn't normally used as an advantage or disadvantage in a fight unless its self-imposed or Flight.

So, to conclude this post, there are already distinct advantages anyone can have. Why is Water Walking specifically disallowed, or rather required to spend OM for?

EDIT: To add a bit more, the combination of breathing underwater and swimming (for free) makes water walking almost pointless. There is zero reason for you not to keep up. Its almost pointless, because there is value in RP Fodder.

Re: Water Walking - Minato Namikaze - 11-20-2015

Desco, you're making a big deal out of something that is required to be paid for.

Water walking has distinct advantages as it allows you to walk on water instead of having to swim. Also, the way Ururu's move is phrased allows her to use it in combat with minimal energy cost and concentration, it can also be used to walk up walls, along ceilings, up trees, on water etc.

Also, no, not all characters are granted the ability to breath under water (naturally) when they enter the Omniverse. It's just stated that characters that can, don't need to purchase it as a move. Also characters that can't would not need to purchase it as a move as they could just summon a breathing apparatus, which would have it's cost hand waved.

The move is being used to give advantages in battle, therefore it requires a cost. That's a simple as it gets. It's not changing.

If a move that you think should be fodder can be used to gain advantages in a competitive sense, we are going to charge you for it. No getting around that.

Re: Water Walking - Schwi Dola - 11-20-2015

Its a small deal and a decent topic. Water walking is not any more of an advantage than breathing underwater, in space, or swimming. Its being able to use the terrain in a way others can't.

Someone that can water walk has no advantage against someone who breathes in water and swims in water. Both of which are free. Self imposed restrictions, IE: NOT taking what is free, have no bearing on it.

I would agree with you if you can show me how it is an advantage to someone that breathes underwater and swims.

Pretty easy...trying to escape from a fight...run on water...done. it is a tactical advantagr if writte correctly. So its a move.

Also...you seem to forget a single important thing...omnifysics. people that once were able to breathe underwater suddenly have a hard time doing so here..so a fishman character would have to buy underwater breathing just as much as an angel character has to buy fly in order to use his wings.

Kanda out

Specifically breathing underwater and space are officially free. Check the rules or search the help desk if you like confirmation. ^^

I checked....yet there isnt one regarding water walking. So it would be a move. I was just thinking of examples...didny have time to check the rules for exceptions while at work

Re: Water Walking - Schwi Dola - 11-20-2015

Well yes, there isn't one for water walking. That is something I don't agree with for reasons already stated ^^. Or what comes to me as a plausible reason for Water Walking to not be free for anyone that wants to use it would work as well.

Re: Water Walking - Yu Kanda - 11-20-2015

Well the main reason : Omni decided not to put it in as an exception.

Second..becauee of the tactical advantage in combat

Re: Water Walking - Jade Harley - 11-20-2015

When you reach 10 SPD, running on water becomes possible for an indefinite period of time.

Re: Water Walking - Schwi Dola - 11-20-2015

1) Can't think of everything ^^

2) Disadvantage. You would be allowed to swim as fast as you can run. If you want to. Any Merman or aquatic creature could do so. If you are walking on top of the water You only have the options of movement you would on land, added that you can go down. Someone that swims and breathes underwater can move in three dimensions with a twitch.

Of course it can be RP'ed as an advantage. So can underwater breath. Or swimming against someone who can't because he's made of steel. But its all fodder, as would be breathing in space and water. With the restriction lifted anyone would be allowed to summon up something to deal with water walking.

Terrain shouldn't matter in a fight, the same principle as breathing in water or space. Unless you choose to self-impose that restriction.

EDIT: I am making one assumption.

Can you swim as fast as you can run? (If the answer to this would be no then I guess water walking is an advantage and would be a proper move)

What Item, that you know of, allows you to walk on water?

I only know of this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walking_on_water which doesn't actually work.

Magic anything.

Weighing 3 pounds to begin with and in similar fashion to small insects.

Anything that creates an effective ship on your feet. Water Skates, though you'd need a little more tech to them to make them as mobile as magic.
