Beastmaker - an RP Boardgame? - Undyne - 11-07-2015 If any of you read "The Seventh tower" by Garth Nix, you'll know what I'm talking about. For the others, at one point in the book series the protagonist played a game called Beastmaker, which I think would be awesome to have in the Omniverse. Basically, it's a competitive game where you create a chimeric monster by combining seven creatures and having it duke it out against your opponent. The rules are simple: it's a boardgame with two sides, which have seven card "slots" and a round open area in the center. The game also includes a deck of cards which is shared by the players. The players then in turn draw one card, which will represent a monster, animal or beast, and put it into one of the card slots of their choosing while declaring their move. Each slot has an attribute displayed next to the slot with a little pictogram: "Intelligence" (a brain), "Strength" (a flexing arm), "Temperament" (bulging veins), "Speed" (two triangle arrows), "Heart" (a <3), "Skin" (scales) and "Joker" (a ? mark). Once all seven cards are laid out on both sides, a chimera will appear in the central piece, having the attributes of the seven cards in the slots. As a player places their card, they must announce what they are doing. For instance, let's say player A drew a "Mountain Bear" and wants to put it into the Strength slot. They will say "Strength of a Mountain Bear" as they put the card in. There is no real "wrong" placement, as all cards have their advantages and drawbacks. Intelligence is less straightforward than it sounds: how smart will your chimera be? Instinct-driven or humanly intelligent? This also influences its reflexes and how it may react to other chimeras. Strength is also fairly complex: is your chimera suited for powerhouse attacks or for quick bursts before needing a break? And where is its strength? A gorilla has quite different muscle setups than say, a tiger. Temperament dictates the actions and reactions of your chimera. Are they quick to anger, do they even have a berserker trigger? Or do they remain calm and collected? Will they attack fast or be more analytical? Do they taunt the other monster? Or are they observant hunters? Speed is relatively straightforward: is your chimera fast, and how so? Do they have lightning-quick reflexes? Do they cover big distances in short amounts of time? Again, the gorilla and tiger example: a tiger is fit for quick bursts but will rapidly tire, where a gorilla is slow but steady. Heart dictates the most important organ of your chimera. Is it a powerful pump that sends blood through the chimera and keeps it nicely topped off? Can it accelerate to huge rates to restore stamina? A heart is the foundation to your chimera, thus it's important to choose wisely. Skin once more is straightforward: what sort of stuff separates the vulnerable flesh from your opponent's chimera's attacks? Hard scales? Blubbery skin that fills in the injuries? Rubbery skin that causes attacks to bounce off? Maybe it's slimy and sticky? Joker is probably the most fun slot: it gives your chimera a special ability, which is pretty much unique to the cards you draw. This can be an offensive, defensive or utility thing and without thorough knowledge of the game it's hard to know what you'll get. Wings? Snapping jaws? Extendible claws? Regenerating stone-skin? Firebreath? A sword? It could be anything. After the cards have been set, the chimeras appear in the center of the board and will proceed to battle to the death. Last one standing is the winner. Special Rules: These can be used if you want but don't have to be included. Swap out allows you to switch two monsters in their respective slots that you have previously placed. You can only do this once, after placing all seven cards but before the chimeras appear. New draw lets you discard a card you drew but consider unfitting for your current setup, and draw a new one. You can only do this once, and you can't back out on your discarding if the new card doesn't fit you either. Card deck... yeah, that's the problem. 40+ cards would probably be the minimum. Until then I was thinking that players can use... say, a Hearthstone deck that picks out a random card for you. Or a list of Dota2/LoL heroes with a random one being picked out. This could also take place in a Yugioh-esque fashion where the two characters have a machine attached to their arm and place the cards there. Re: Beastmaker - an RP Boardgame? - The Rogue - 11-07-2015 I have ideas for card packs Re: Beastmaker - an RP Boardgame? - Asriel Dreemurr - 11-07-2015 SeaWing: A dragon from the Wings of Fire series Intelligence: Humanly intelligent Strength: 18 feet tall, so can lift a man with ease Temperament: In battle, they mercilessly rip apart their enemies Speed: Again, 18 feet tall, but travels about 30 miles per hour on foot. By flight, about 40. Heart: Huge heart, but about the same performance level as a human's Skin: Swords bounce off Joker: Breathing in water More will be added later. Re: Beastmaker - an RP Boardgame? - Undyne - 11-10-2015 Feel free to post lists, Connor I'm happy for any input. Also, Sackboy, I'm not sure if you get the concept The cards should have one of each attribute, so you can put them into each slot rather than being limited to one. So a card should have a short description of what it would do for each slot you stick it into.
Re: Beastmaker - an RP Boardgame? - Ruby Rose - 11-10-2015 Is it just me who thinks the 'animals' should be Omniverse characters in the OV version of the game? Re: Beastmaker - an RP Boardgame? - Strazio Rockwell - 11-10-2015 This is a cool concept!
