2016 - Proto Man - 06-29-2015

So a year is a long time away, but I thought I'd get some final input before I lock up the Dante Verse.

As it stands, I'd like to see another summer Syntex Dante's Abyss event, pending there's some interest.

What form that takes, ultimately, is something I'm not sure about and wouldn't be for a long time. I was pretty impressed by the turnout this year and the retention rate. Honestly, I was really impressed and totally blown away by the activity and emotional investment.

If there is a sequel, I imagine that the rewards would be scaled back, because I wouldn't want people to feel too obligated to participate in an event for fear that failing to do so would cause them to drop too far down the metaphorical (well I guess it's legit now with that recent path) ladder of ranking (perhaps with just one or two artefact prizes, depending on whether or not the market grows any over the coming year).

So, yea, if there's interest next April/May, I'd like to see another one of these happen. As I said, I don't know what form it would take, and I can guarantee that I wouldn't be the host if people want the 'Battle Royale'-style Dante's Abyss (that's what I'll call this years 'version') to return. While I personally love that format for its blend of luck, heart, and determination, I think hosting it twice wouldn't be fair (a different host... or two hosts even, would provide a fresh spin and reset the mystique).

I'd be more interesting in doing something like a moral traditional tournament that captures some elements of variability and luck... or some sort of 'Gang wars' style that capitalizes on the various player factions. Plus, if it's the Battle Royale version, I wouldn't mind handing over Karl Jak and giving it a go myself =P

So yea... feel free to express any interest you have an throw any concepts you'd be curious to see next year. I'll be locking up these forums in a week or two.

Re: 2016 - Retane - 06-29-2015

- Do the DA Faction Team Thing Reb once did. But different?

-I'm actually down for being a second chair if someone else wants to handle another 'Battle Royal'... I know how to work this better then you and Reb>_>

Want some suggestions? Always ask me>_>

Re: 2016 - Alain the Carnedge - 06-29-2015

If Dante's Abyss returns next year, I will join again. And do better. FIGHT ME! :rage:

That aside though, I'd hope that next time, assuming it's the same type of uh...game, there's either limitations on teams (You can only team up with characters your guy/gal would team up with IC for...obvious reasons, max of 3 people, etc) and/or assigning random teams at the beginning (likely with the choice to choose one teammate at the start so it isn't a complete diceroll, man the way I'm explaining this sounds like an actual videogame) and potentially forcing the characters to get over their hatred of X, whoever X is. (That awkward moment when Cindy is paired up with Hamus)

Also assuming pocket verses are available by the time the next DA rolls around (and they're really expensive/rare), the top prize could be a permanent PV.

Re: 2016 - Minato Namikaze - 06-29-2015

So, I know this doesn't fit, but it's an interesting Idea and could be pawned off as a Version of Dante's abyss. But you could host a chuunin Exam.
of course, in the sense that it's just called a chuunin exam and has 2 or 3 separate stages all with a different set of rules (which would allow for 2 - 3 separate hosts).
The rewards, of course, wouldn't be like they are in Naruto, but you could just make the rewards relevant to the omniverse.

Re: 2016 - Retane - 06-29-2015

I can second chair and fix shit to How a DA should really be>_>

The guy that lives for it... Making shit amazing>_> Lol

Re: 2016 - Erza Scarlet - 06-29-2015

"I can second chair and fix shit to How a DA should really be>_>"

I'd love to see your ideas. Based on what I've heard of previous DA's, and the resources Proto had available, I believe he handled it quite nicely, and am somewhat sceptical that improvements wouldn't come naturally just based on the crowdthink that happened during the first DA.

Re: 2016 - Gildarts - 06-29-2015

Wellllllll, I pretty much agree with a lot of what you just covered in the topic starter, so I don't really have much to say at this time about a lot you have mentioned (here I was thinking I could get to say something epic.) As for battles and things, I'm not exactly the most fight-oriented rper on the site, but I really like what has been done so far and think a unique spin on it would be intriguing for next year.

Re: 2016 - Strazio Rockwell - 06-29-2015

So first of all I have to say for this being my first DA I'm very happy with how it turned out. It was crazy fun and the anticipation of each F2F and EE had me on the edge of my seat. Every fight was well thought out and was very fun to read so from a flavor standpoint this competition was the tits more or less. There were a few things mechanically that didn't feel write, but they were few and far between. So I'm just going to dump out some of my thoughts here for now in hopes that it'll spur some dialogue and thinking amongst the community.

Alliances

So this was a big one that people talked about a lot. Between the supergroups like MESH and NBC and Ambrosia or even the smaller clusters of friendos like the marines and the RnR Connection it felt like almost everyone was in an alliance at some point. And who can really blame anyone? OOC we're all great friends and cohorts and IC it just makes sense that a pack would survive better than a loner. Hell even though I ran solo for 90 percent of the event I was still coordinating on others in Skype to avoid unsavory F2Fs. The only real detterent to allying is the threat of the banishment serum, which was used but out of 40+ combatants the odds of you even seeing the player with the serum is low. So perhaps some more banckstabby items would remedy the situation as a whole? Maybe things that aren't as destructive as the serum but still a major drawback. That way we don't feel so bad OOC for backstabbing and it also makes us more nervous about alliances because the odds of someone having a a backstab item is greatly increased. Maybe even have special backstab PM events like "do you want to strangle this bastard in his/her sleep?"

The furby event did a good job of splitting people up, but with skype communication it wasn't as effective as it should've been. A no skype rule would be impossible to enforce and rather I suggest more mini-events like that. Perhaps a group gets seperated during a F2F at night? Maybe they stumble upon a random obstacle designed to split people up (like a trap door that whisks one person away to another part of the island or hell even a hidden teleporter)

A hard set in stone rule stopping alliances from getting too large would work, but it also feels like it would be kind of hammed up in terms of IC justification. Maybe if we had some kind of doubles event? Like you get randomly assigned a partner and you can't ally with anyone else but them. Perhaps even going so far as to having the collar injure you if your ally is killed, which would force even IC enemies to try and work together.

The Map

Overall I think the map was solid, it had diverse locations that provided plenty of RP fodder. Some things I would like to see are more randomly placed hazards and neat things. Maybe a telescope on top of one of the buildings in the town, letting you see surrounding squares? Or even like a teleporter that lets you take a trip to another square on the island. This could add more random dynamics to the game and even potentially help people that got screwed over in the beginning with shitty weapons or going against rough opponents. Overall the map was solid, but I think it could've been more than RP fodder and a grid.

Weapons

All the weapons were really cool and interesting. The only gripe I have with them is that a lot of them seem one-dimesional. The pokeball and some of the utility items felt really cool, but most of the items fell simply into a tier list of power. Maybe having some more niche items or items that are completely worthless expept in certain situations? This is definently the smallest suggestion I have, because after all the contest isn't about the weapons its about roleplaying.

At any rate its like twelve here and I'm getting tired so I'll edit this later in the week with more suggestions.

Re: 2016 - Retane - 06-29-2015

What ruined this and made it harder was... the Life Total...

Re: 2016 - Guu - 06-30-2015

I've already mentioned some of my ideas to proto, so he already knows those. xD

Guu might be pulled in as a co-judge against her will next year, but we'll see where I'm at by then.

Re: 2016 - Ganondorf - 06-30-2015

I'm willing to get into any version of DA. It's not a saga if Ganny D isn't involved.

Re: 2016 - Blackfire - 06-30-2015

I thought DA Syntex was pretty cool, despite my PC getting killed by her husband. Wouldn't mind seeing one here.

Re: 2016 - Mickey Mouse - 06-30-2015

Mickey doesn't want to enter a Syntax sponsored event but I'm sure I could make him

That said, I'd prefer something that hinges more on player cooperation than the Battle Royale style next time. I think this format set up some really nice relationships and something that lends itself more to the team format would be cool. I know I personally am pumped to explore the relationships Mickey made with people like Erza and Samus and Harry, and I'm sure others would agree that it'd be a fitting continuation to have a version that allows for a dynamic, interesting way to explore those. Maybe something styled loosely like the War of the Five Kings in GOT, or DA: Conquest for those who remember it?

Re: 2016 - Jim Raynor - 07-01-2015

I'd love to give it a go again. Anything staff run in general is awesome.

Re: 2016 - Erik Vrell - 07-01-2015

I think this would be a good idea. I'd like to be part of next years DA, especially since I didn't join in time for this years DA.

Re: 2016 - Omni - 07-01-2015

Personally my problem with the DA format is, as aforestated, the metagaming aspects that push characters into Alliances and things that don't always make sense IC. I'd prefer something with story over meaningless combat and meta-gaming. That said, if it launches again I'm sure many people would be happy to see it. But since you are reworking it, I thought I'd mention the things that might get me to play again.

Re: 2016 - Thaal Sinestro - 07-01-2015

I am gonna suggest a last-man-standing format, but with a series of "Levels" that provide more of an environmental hazard than this DA. There will also be BOSSES at the end of every level before you can move on. The Bosses are hard to beat, so you probably need a team to get through them, but it's not unheard of to Solo them. The prizes for the competition are based off of how many bosses the players beat, and are awarded to the last remaining players. So if you beat 10 bosses, the prizes go to the 10 players who die last. As the game goes on, the prizes get more and more amazing.

I think this format would allow players to work together, work separately and invite PvP without forcing anyone to do any of those things.

Re: 2016 - Schwi Dola - 07-02-2015

Lesser rewards for high places that aren't arifavts could be consumables from the shop

Re: 2016 - Retane - 07-02-2015

I still say Should Ask me for help.... But what do i know?

Re: 2016 - Thaal Sinestro - 07-03-2015

Desco Wrote:Lesser rewards for high places that aren't arifavts could be consumables from the shop
Yeah, that would be great.

I also had the idea of smaller "mini accomplishments" for small tasks on certain levels, which would go to anyone who completed the task. That was people who aren't necessarily in the top X could walk away with prizes if they aspired to it.

EDIT: OO! OO! OO! It could even by spiraling DOWN, like the levels of Hell? Like an ABYSS?? GET IT!!?!?!?!@?#$!?
