Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Trixie - 05-09-2015 See what I miss when I'm gone? Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Proto Man - 05-09-2015 Inorite? It's okay, I still haven't bought anything beside a case and a dvd drive, because I've been too busy trying to save money for other stuff. Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Proto Man - 07-11-2015 What I've got: RAM (I got 16 GB, I think that's enough?) Power Supply Case SSD and HDD What I still need Operating System (Windows 8, I guess?) Mobo CPU (looking at a few) Graphics Card Sound Card Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Thaal Sinestro - 07-11-2015 Proto Man Wrote:What I've got:From what I hear Windows 10 isn't half bad Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Magus - 07-11-2015 Proto Man Wrote:What I've got: 16GB RAM is overkill if you're just building a gaming rig. You will never need more than 8 even running everything maxed out (this will likely change in whatever generation comes after PS4/XB1 but you've got some time for that). Win8 isn't as bad as everyone says but 7 is better. Consider pirating 7 and upgrading to 10 for free. Not that I'd know anything about that. For the GPU, the R9 series is pretty great if you want a seriously good card on a budget. They don't run very hot either, contrary to popular opinion. I have a Sapphire R9 290 (4GB DDR5) and it has never seen high temps. A lot of GPUs have built-in audio support, too! Might save you a PCI slot (and some cash). Don't skimp on the mobo, either. Especially if you want to overclock. You can get an Asus for a reasonable price if you're on a budget and if you want to go all-out you can get a badass ASRock one or something. I'd be happy to nerd out about the various bits and bobs w/ you if you ever want. Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Proto Man - 07-26-2015 My RAM is of a higher frequency (I think that's the correct word?) than what my future mobo supports. Will the motherboard downclock it (is that the right word?) or do I need to return and swap out for a model that has the same frequency. Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Retane - 07-26-2015 OH... THat Question Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Retane - 07-26-2015 Its been a while, but your Motherboard has a max limit for a Reason, just like Ram does, and everything else. You can tear stuff up that isn't compatible. PLus the RAM chip has to fit lol. But a Mother Board that can't handle THe RAM rate WIll nOt handle the RAM Rate and will down clock it, or tear it up. I haven't been out of computers long enough to know that the Cap is the cap unless you want to burn shit up Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Magus - 07-26-2015 I don't think it'd cause damage but Retane's right: get a mobo that supports your RAM's native speed. Sometimes you can get away w/ it and it'll just slow it down, other times it just won't work at all. Compatibility is key - will save you many headaches. Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Proto Man - 07-26-2015 Yea, I'll get a new one. I just wanted to know whether or not I'd need to set aside some time tomorrow to mail it back (which I will), and I'll sort out the last bits of this computer if I have any money left post-vacation. Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Proto Man - 10-16-2015 I've got an AM3+ processor and want to grab a motherboard with this paycheck. Anyone have any ideas what's decent before I start rifling through Neweggs sales. Anyone have any ideas what's decent before I start rifling through Neweggs sales. What's your RAM requirement? Any of these ASUS boards are a good choice http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... 0600138080 My next suggestion would be anything Biostar. Unfortunately Newegg only has one Biostar MOBO capable of running AM3+ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813138372 Then if you must you can go with MSI http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... 0600138080 They're trust worthy when they work, but getting support from MSI for an MSI product is by far the worst experience I've ever had. I had to send in my girlfriends laptop that I got her (Which is an MSI) for RMA Service and they were just horrible. Asus is so much better. If there's a company you want to deal with when your shit breaks I'd recommend Asus. Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Proto Man - 10-28-2015 I've got everything except a GPU. Shooting for something that balances some power with a not ridiculous price (like below 200 dollars). Any ideas, Computer Construction Enthusiasts? Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Trixie - 10-28-2015 Nvidia is your best bet. I didn't like ATI before and now that AMD owns them...well. This card is really nice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814487091 This is one is great as well http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814487158 Anything with an Nvidia chipset that's above the GTX 750 from a brand such as EVGA, ASUS, Gigabyte, even MSI in this case. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... 0600030348 The above link is a list of cards that have the Nvidia chipset that range from 100 - 200 dollars. Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Magus - 10-28-2015 Trixie Wrote:Nvidia is your best bet. I didn't like ATI before and now that AMD owns them...well. Fuck. That. Team Red is the shit. Root for the little guy! http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-Radeon-PCI-Express-Graphics-11230-00-20G/dp/B00IZXOW80/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1446083125&sr=1-2&keywords=saphire+r9+280 That is a Sapphire R9 280. A little over $200 USD but it's a 3GB card and Sapphire is solid as shit, plus this card is usually $300 USD. I'm running their 290 Tri-X and I have had no problems at all and have yet to play a game I can't run on max settings at 1080p. Whether you go Nvidia or AMD, do not buy a reference card (that is, don't buy an nVidia or AMD branded card). Reference cards are shit and almost any other brand will sell a better version of the same card for a better price. Sapphire happens to be the bee's knees for AMD cards. The brands Trix recommended for the nVidia lineup (EVGA, Asus, Gigabyte, MSI) are all very good Nvidia brands, if you'd prefer that route. Re: Computer Construction Enthusiasts - Trixie - 10-28-2015 Magus Wrote:Trixie Wrote:Nvidia is your best bet. I didn't like ATI before and now that AMD owns them...well. See, if ATI is working for you; that's wonderful. It's just my past experience with them has steered me clear of anything from that side the aisle. You generally never want to buy anything directly from a manufacturer unless it's replacement parts in the computer world. It's usually over priced as shit. As for the Sapphire card. I haven't heard anything bad as of yet. |
