RE: Suggest me Anime - Guu - 09-05-2017

@Ammy: I've seen the original Hellsing all the way through. I've only seen one episode of Ultimate though so I could put that on the reserve list. (EDIT: Despite the original being availible, Ulitmate is oddly not on Crunchyroll. How bizzare...)
I've watched quite a bit of the Yu-Gi-Oh 4kids dub, but I haven't seen it in Japanese, so not uncalled for.
Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night... definitely going on the list. Considering my history with Gilgamesh.
You should watch Azumanga Daioh. It's part of anime history. Unfortunately, I have seen it many times, so staying off the list for now.

RE: Suggest me Anime - Summer - 09-05-2017

Eve no Jikan - A simply amazing anime about what it means to be human, and where androids fit in there. A bit on the shorter side tho, 6 Ep, each ~15 min.

Mob Psycho 100 - From the author of One Punch Man. A coming-of-age story about a boy and his psychic powers.

Tonari no Seki-kun - Short (~5 min), hilarious episodes about a boy who goofs off in class, and the girl sitting next to him who can't help but get way too wrapped up in it.

Demi-chan wa kataritai - A very adorable and comfy SOL featuring demi-humans, and their teacher who just wants to understand them better. Despite coming out during the influx of monster girl harem shows, it is not one of those, and actually handles its topics very well.

RE: Suggest me Anime - Guu - 09-05-2017

@Summer: Added to Reserve List. I had to alter some to their English titles because Crunchyroll is like that.

RE: Suggest me Anime - Mega Man X - 09-05-2017

Gurren Lagann.

An absolute perfect mix of zany intense off-the-walls mecha action and heart-wrenching inspirational messages. Watch it. Watch the anime series, and then watch the two movies that retell the series with altered story and new dramatic final battles. You will love it, or your money back.

Anime Reflections #3 - Guu - 09-05-2017

Food Wars (episode 2): Man, both shows I’m following now is about really hard to get into schools. I should really pick something different for my third show… Kil la Kill is about a school isn’t it?

Also, is there some parallel between his dad saying he needs a woman to cook for, and the fact that all of the judges have been women so far? Feels like they are trying to sell guys on becoming better chefs entirely to please a potential girlfriend.

I mean, yeah, that would please most girlfriends, but you should really cook for more than just that.

Then again, maybe they are all women just to get them all naked when the foodgasms happen.

Also, I saw that old guy eavesdropping from the hallway. Assuming that’s Goddess Tongue’s grandpa and that’s how he gets in.

You know, I didn’t quite enjoy this one as much as the first. Maybe I was in the wrong mindset for this. I know it’s a comedy, I know you aren’t suppose to take the storyline seriously. It just kind of felt odd they even allow this woman to judge. I can understand why some people would care so much about pedigree and status when it comes to food. We tend to associate money with fine dining. We tend to obsess about ratings, stars, or whatever mumbo jumbo we think a restaurant’s worth. But you know, sometimes the best burger you ever had cost $10 from a tiny shop run by one guy. A judge for this academy should know that. Literally her entire case for denying him was the fact he was from a small diner, why does she get to decide who enters the academy when quality of food is not her main priority? Do they not want paying students here?

I guess the logic behind it is her grandpa gave her the job but… no… wouldn’t she be more useful judging senior students? It just makes no sense she’s judging at entry level. How is the school that give this much of a shit about pedigree and status be THIS bad at business?

Also, why does the protag have such a weak pedigree? His father is literally travelling the world, serving fine restaurant after fine restaurant. Does that not account for anything? I guess it’s because he prides himself in running a small shop.

But again, I’m taking this waaaay too seriously.

I’ll need to look up the dish from today’s episode. Went by so fast, not sure how those gelatin squares were associated with chicken. I’m expecting cooking videos for every dish served in this show.

Sorry if I’m coming off as negative. I guess I should list some positives.

Despite hating what she stands for, I do like Goddess Tongue as a concept. The idea of a baby’s first words being criticisms of her mom’s breast milk is the funniest joke in the show so far. I do hope she gets more characterization later, maybe a chance at redemption. Then again, we could just never see her again.

Food looks great, and I love how it is a transforming dish. His pre-established inventiveness pays off again.

Overall, I just didn’t feel the magic I got from the first episode. Again, maybe I just was in the wrong mindset this morning.

Polar Bear Cafe (episode 1): Sorry anyone who wanted me to tackle Konosoba or Kil la Kill first, but I thought at least one of the shows I follow should be light.

I wasn’t sure what I was expecting. I think I was imagining something along the lines of We Bare Bears except with more elements from the slice of life genre… I wasn’t too far off from that really.

I do like the choice of making the animals super realistic. While it’s kind of limiting on movement, there is quite bit of charm seeing these scenarios play out with real animals, hearing Panda’s voice come from a real panda. Also, not making their mouth movements too pronounced kept it from dipping into uncanny valley. I can’t imagine how the hyper realistic character designs would have looked if they moved their mouths like a human when they talked.

(I have expected Panda to be a love starved Otaku but that’s We Bare Bears again.)

Panda’s hunt for a job got a tad real for me. Instead of looking for a part-time job myself, I’m sitting at home watching anime. At least I’m getting some experience writing out of this… which is what I’m sure a lot of unemployed people say.

(Eh, the county’s on fire, I’ll go hunt for work later.)

I actually expected Panda to get a job at the cafe. Not sure how it would happen, maybe he’d show potential somehow that would land him the job. I think the writer’s expected their audience to think this because as soon as Panda’s interview came up, they had penguin say how they finally had a respectable one.

In retrospect, I’m not sure how I thought it would be anything but a failure.

Instead, he gets a job as a zoo exhibit. I almost expected something more sinister when the zookeeper told him to “act natural” after the preschoolers left. I thought he was going to be enrolled in a mating program or something. But after putting on a show for the kids, he conked out for the rest of the day and that pretty much qualified as natural.

He goes to the cafe after work and hangs out with the other exhibits who welcome him with open arms and the episode ends with Panda finally getting his damn bamboo.

I dunno why, probably because the writers were toying with my expectations a bit, but I thought this was going to be about a lazy panda learning the value of hard work. Instead, I think this is probably something along the lines of Cheers with animals; just following the lives of the regulars of this cafe.

While the first episode didn’t leave that huge an impact, I did enjoy it. The characters are charming and I’m curious where the series is going to go in the next… 50 EPISODES? THIS SHOW IS 50 EPISODES LONG?

Welp, this show will be filling a slot for a while. xD

(Later that afternoon)
Konosuba (Episode 1): At the start of the episode, I kind of hated the two leads. They were both kind of horrible people. Goddess Booty was having way too much fun at the Protag’s death, while the lead was having way too much fun kidnapping the goddess. They’re both guilty of the same jackassery. I mean, I understand why they behave that way, it’s in character, but it doesn’t mean I have to like then. Though, mercifully, i guess even the writers couldn’t keep that up, they evened out pretty quickly once they were in fantasy world.

Before we get too much further, I should mention that the fanservice in this show is despicable. Look, I don’t mind women dressing skimpily in media. If it makes sense for a character like Aqua to walk around in a mini-skirt with no underwear on, then it’s kind of justified. I could question your motives behind making such a character, but at least you tried to tie the fan service into the world and not the world into the fan service and I could respect that.

But the show quite blatantly shoves the camera in her ass numerous times, often times to the expense of the story, it’s exploitative and gross.

And I frikkin’ fall for it every time in this show @.@

I don’t usually fall for such gross fan service, but something about Aqua, my god. Something about her just clicks and every time her cheeks give a mug shot I just… ack! Bisexual struggles!

I just hope she’s legal, I don’t know if I could handle that revelation in my life right now.

I am glad she grows into a more likeable character by the end of the episode, even being nicer to the lead guy who I haven’t bothered to learn the name of. It’s kind of funny, I think she needed to this adventure way more than the dude does. She’s only been in the fantasy world for like a week or so and it’s already done wonders for her disposition.

I do like the main character got to flex his gamer knowledge during this episode. Outside that, he was fairly useless outside landing a 9-5 job. Maybe that will be his arc this season? Or maybe he’ll wind up like Hare from that time Guu trapped him in a RPG and just be completely useless. Kind of funny how little characterization the guy gets.

Well, now that my unfortunate crush on Aqua has ensured I’ll be watching more of this, I guess I’ll be seeing where this goes.

Welp, I’m going to hell apparently! See ya all later!

RE: Suggest me Anime - Amaterasu - 09-06-2017

Welp, thank you for effectively ruining my chances of ever working my way through the backlog of stuff I want to watch some day or another (and games in my Steam library I will possibly play someday) :frogbon:

On another note, did you watch One Punch Man yet? While it's a parody of "superhero" style animes, I find that the anime goes beyond the original "dumb joke" and actually expands into a very interesting series. Also it's not hundreds of episodes long (yet) so you could watch it in a couple of days.

RE: Suggest me Anime - Guu - 09-07-2017

@mega man x: I've seen up to when they first go to space. Not sure if I should pick up from there or rewatch from the start.

@ammy: One Puuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuunccch!
I have seen it xD

I'll be watching and reviewing more episodes today!

RE: Suggest me Anime - Omni - 09-07-2017

BERSERK. Nothing like it for nostalgia. Not the new one, the old one. Just seeing clips of the new one makes me cry. The old animation style was so good.

Code Geass. Death Note-ish with mechs. Continues to be one of my favourite shows ever.

Fullmetal Alchemist. I recommend watching the original, THEN Brotherhood.

RE: Suggest me Anime - Guu - 09-07-2017

@Omni: I'll add the animes to the queue later. (Btw, it looks like the original FMA isn't availible in Crunchyroll.)

I could only get one review out, I'm getting really really tired right now. I doubt I could manage another tonight.

My Hero Academia (episode 3): Boy do I love this series. The rocky montage begins!

At first, I kind of felt it cheating when the All Might offered his power. I mean, it was a cool little surprise and all, also means the words he said at the end of the episode was not of reassurance but of the beginning of a pitch which is kind of funny in hindsight. But as fun as it was, I was afraid he would just be given power just like that and become just like everyone else.

And once again it pulled the rug from under me and cut to a junkyard where he was tasked to pull a fridge. At first, I thought he was gonna gain the power through brute training and dedication and all that talk about it being inherited was a metaphor. Hell, that may still be the case, but more on that later.

I like how the Protag continues to surprise his hero; the fact he stuck to the brutal schedule, the fact he kept going even when he fell limp on the ground, the fact he ACTUALLY CLEARED THE BEACH!

Oh yeah, btw, I love this show doesn’t skimp on the value of volunteer work. That kid definitely made a difference, no matter how little he wants to give himself the credit.

It’s kind of funny he kind of spit my own words back at me. Heck, even if the power transfers over, I’d be satisfied with the way he got it. The kid EARNED it! But despite all that work, it still felt like cheating to him. I guess when you’ve spent your whole life being told what you can’t do, you can’t help but subscribe to that mindset as well.

...yeah, I can relate to that…

Of course, then they surprise me with the All Might making him eat his hair. Funny! And a bit gross!

Honestly, still not sure if the power transfer was a real thing or if the All Might was hoping for a placebo effect. I guess we’ll find out next episode as we’re thrown into the entrance exams.

Gravity Girl’s design is very cute! I wonder if I should be shipping her with the protag or should I wait until frog girl comes into play. Also, apparently our hero has zero experience talking to girls. Well, that’s something All Might may need to hammer out with him later…

Not shockingly, they send their applicants right into the fray. Between this, Food Wars, and RWBY, it seems to be a theme in school based shows to have high action and sometimes high danger entrance exams.

It’d almost be subversive for one of these shows to start with a simple written exam. Just imagine, the hero walks towards the class, he hears people crying about how the teacher is the worst person to take the test under, and how the school has an admission rate of 10%. Then he just takes a really hard written exam and finds the teacher is just really anal about people having their phones off.

Anyways, with that derail, I think I’ve covered my thoughts! Really good training segment, but the rest is just a setup for next episode. Nothing wrong with that, but just makes me eager to see the next one. XD

RE: Suggest me Anime - Guu - 09-08-2017

My Hero Academy (episode 4): This show just gives me the warm fuzzies!

Yes, I said it, I am not ashamed.

I love this show never forgets about heroism. It never forgets what it all takes; the drive to act, the willingness to risk anything for another life, and the power to inspire others. God, I’ve talked about this before, it’s so refreshing considering the current climate of the superhero genre.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

As I should start with ONE PUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNCCH!

Wait, no, that’s still getting ahead of myself.

Of course, being thrown into the fray with no experience with his new quirk whatsoever, he completely gets left behind. Funny it just goes straight into the combat. Were they worried the written test might impair their abilities?

Creative powers this episode! Of course, Gravity Girl is my favorite, racking up kills with her mad gravity skills! No, she’s not my fav because he design is cute, shut up! Don’t accuse me of being so petty! It’s not like I openly admitted to being a pervert in a recent review or something.

Oh.

WELL GRAVITY GIRL IS OFF LIMITS! SHE IS R34 RETARDANT! ONLY PURENESS! I WILL PUNCH ANYONE THAT CHANGES THAT!

We get a reaffirming of episode 2. As soon as he saw Gravity Girl was in trouble, his legs took off, but this time… this time….

ONE PUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCHHHH!!!! Oh my god that was awesome! So incredibly I almost completely looked past the clenching your butt line.

And his frikkin’ arms and legs are broken, glorious! And it makes sense considering what the All Right said about consequences. This is pretty practical.

I like how he was coming up with a complex plan to stop himself with a punch, and yet he was saved with a slap.

Oh man, and the aftermath. It was kind of fun when everyone was discussing the hero, even wondering if his fidgety demeanor was a ruse. Yeah, he’s going to be notorious in this school.

Even more fun was that one guy who pointed out how the hero just charged in without thinking. He was more concerned about the bravery behind the act and not the act itself. I’m going to like that guy. Kind of curious where his relationship with the protag will go.

Oh yeah, grandma. No one tell the hero how his bones healed.

Of course, he was going to get into school, aspects of this show are predictable, but they do it so incredibly well I don’t give a shit. And I like how Gravity Girl tries to offer her own points. I’m glad she got in as well!

This show is a genuine treat <3

Konosuba (episode 2): I have to say, enjoyed this way more than the first episode! I know I’m giving away my feelings too early in the review, but still…

Thankfully the inexplicable butt shots were at a minimum, so I could pay more attention to the plot with little distraction.

I liked the protag’s musings about how adventurers are just basically temp workers with no job security. You know, I haven’t really thought of “Adventurer” as a job title in the sense of a clerk or janitor. Or in cases where it has been considered, it’s usually a highly lucrative job.

I remember in the pathfinder beginner’s campaign, it specifically says at the end of the journey you make 10x more on gold than you’ve ever owned your whole life just from one dungeon raid. Heck, with the profession skill, you’re lucky if you’re even doing a piece of gold a day at all, meanwhile a level 2 adventurer would have 1,000 gold in their pocket already.

Konosuba gives way more credence to a stable life. It’s almost a better idea for our heroes to give up on killing the demon king and settle. I mean, what are they going to get by it anyways? Aqua goes back to greeting dead people for the rest of eternity, and the protag goes back to being dead.

It’s kind of funny Aqua is more motivated than the protag during this adventure. Kind of feels like she’s more in it for fun than desperation to return to her old role. It’s understandable, here she’s free to go places, hang out of bars, and just be with people.

And that brings us to the giant frogs. They were fun. Kind of odd Aqua’s uber l33t attacks had absolutely no effect whatsoever, but it’s still a funny little gag. Also, the fact the frogs froze in place while they ate gave the protag a chance to actually do something for a change.

And then we have a demon wizard. She’s cute! She also kind of reminds me of that wizard guy from 8-but Theater. How he fills all his spell slots with magic that could end the world and has next to nothing else to help the party. Very similar concept, except the wizard here is completely unable to find a group willing to take her along. Yeah, that makes sense…

I like the effects on the explosion magic. Yeah, I can’t imagine that being useful in a dungeon. Makes me wonder if anyone is going to be particularly useful in this show.

Then again, that brings us to the Crusader. She’s got a bit of a stutter. Is that her thing; the face of the group having no charisma at all? I guess we’ll find out next time!

As stated, I had a lot more fun with this episode! I look forward to more!

I have work tomorrow, so we'll see if I can get more episodes in or not!

RE: Suggest me Anime - Guu - 09-14-2017

Konosuba (episode 3): Hey, if Kazuma can only steal underwear, what if he used his thief skill on Aqua? Would it auto-fail? I really wanted him to try it just to see what would happen.

So we finally learn more about our new crusader friend. I remember at the end of the last episode I thought she just had a stutter, but subsequent reflections made me consider that maybe she’s just really really turned on. Well, that certainly was the case! Sad I didn’t guess that in my episode 2 review, now I have no proof I actually guessed it at some point.

I caught on pretty quick that she was a masochist who wanted to throw herself into danger for pain, but she had an extra layer of wanting to be demeaned. Admittedly, I’ve never had to deal with a pain-based sub, only the ones the want to be bound and shouted at. I wouldn’t mind having a few rounds with Darkness. Man, I miss having a sub.

Disregard the last paragraph.

While Kazuma is oblivious to Darkness’ arousal for most of the episode, he quickly picked up that she was a problem. He’s slowly developing a brain on him, picking up on social cues. He’s far from a whiz at it, but maybe in a few months he’ll be the party face. Considering he’s learning thief skills, I guess that’s where he’s going. Then again, by then he’d probably have a horrible reputation and no one would want to talk to him anyways.

The thief character was fun, I liked she tried to con the hell out of Kazuma. I wish he would have a normal reaction to stealing a girl’s underwear though. He’s creepy as fuck laughing like that. Even if she was conning him, not cool dude. You’re the idiot that trusted her after she literally introduced herself as a thief.

Also, isn’t it some sort of sign I’ve seen too much anime that I just knew he was going to steal panties long before the joke landed?

Also, why do the girls in this universe wear panties? It’s a fantasy realm, shouldn’t they be wearing like, bloomers or something?

She steals Megumi’s underwear. It must be weird for those to just suddenly disappear like that… I can’t imagine.

The cabbage attack is the most creative thing this show as thrown at me so far. I like they even detail the life cycle of a living cabbage. I like how it’s pretty much a holiday for the adventurers. I’d imagine that would be fun!

Of course Darkness is useless in offensively. I have no idea what this party hopes to do for damage outside Megumi nuke.

Darkness being a wall. You know, I swear I’ve heard the joke of a party tank being a masochist somewhere before. I have no idea where…

And we end with another nuke going off. For a second there, considering the people caught in the blast lived, I thought the abundance of cabbages came from them being knocked out in the blast. Apparently, Kazuma use his thief skills to snag a ton of them. Wish we could have seen that play out instead of having Aqua gloss over it afterwards.

Sigh, I guess Kazuma is the only one in the group they could rely on. I really hope the others slowly catch up in usefulness. Then again, I guess the opening kind of promises something in that line.

Phew, I can’t do another review tonight. I’ll leave it here!

RE: Suggest me Anime - Schwi Dola - 09-14-2017

Ohhh watch No Game No Life ^^. Story about two otaku gamers, brother and sister, getting sucked into a world where there can be no bodily harm, no stealing, and everything is solved by games. It has a nice art style.

Kazuma is an ass, the others aren't that much better moral-wise. I like Megumin since she's really trying to better herself at something in all of this.

RE: Suggest me Anime - Sarah Kerrigan - 09-18-2017

Alright, gotta suggest a thing now. Specifically, assassination classroom
! I was resistant to catching it when I heard about it, but.... Ita my new fave anime, and knowing you I think it will fit your preference perfectly.

RE: Suggest me Anime - Amaterasu - 09-19-2017

Assassination Classroom is awesome! I've only read the Manga, but the story is great (although a little light-hearted when the fate of the world is at stake - not a spoiler, they reveal that in the first episode), and there's a lot of humor!
