Moderator interest check - Omni - 09-06-2014
I've been keeping an eye out for potential candidates on staff member #4, and though I've already got a good idea of who the next staff member is going to be, I'd like to open up an interest check on those who feel they'd make good moderators, mostly for the future.
The ideal modder should be:
-Active. I'm not expecting you to give up your life, but being around the site a lot is obviously a good thing.
-Easy to get in touch with. I do a lot of communication through staff on the boards through PM and the staff forum, but usually if I wanna quickly speak to someone I just skype 'em. Facebook chat is another option, but I generally use skype (easy to put all the staff members in a chat room there as well).
-Know the rules inside out. This isn't necessarily something I expect overnight, but you should at least have read them all.
-Fearless. Not be afraid to tell a member they've broken a rule and they're gonna have to edit something out. Not be afraid to ask me when they're not sure about something. Not be afraid to tell me they don't like something I'm working on. I'm not saying be a dick - on the contrary! Being able to be firm without being a jerk about it is what I'm looking for.
-Further to this, not a jackass. Anyone that's been a staff member knows that sometimes it can be frustrating dealing with members. But always try and see things from the point of view of the other person.
-Be prepared for me to crush all your hopes and dreams. Without being a dick about it, being a staff member doesn't mean I'm going to necessarily take your creative input more seriously than anyone else's. I like hearing ideas from the entire memberbase, but there's a reason I put on my staff page "I've thrown away way more ideas than I've used". You get used to it. I like this method because it allows us to get stuff done.
-Biomechanical implants that allow them to know what to do and say in every situation.
Seriously though, as a final note I want to emphasize that perfection is not expected. We are not a professional body, I'm not paying you and you don't owe me shit. I want people to be staff because they genuinely want to be. This is why I emphasize all over the site "we are for fun". That extends to staff members. You don't have to put up with abuse from anyone. If someone angers you, feel free to say "I'm not dealing with this". We are members as well as staff, and although I expect some degree of professionalism when it comes to Official Business and obviously for you not to be a complete jackass ...
... What I'm saying is basically, don't stress yourself out. If I choose you as a staff member, it's because I thought you'd be good at it. Don't worry about proving yourself, trying to do all the updates as fast as possible etc, because you'll just burn yourself out, or even make mistakes. I'd much rather you take it easy, leave it to me or another staffer if you're not sure, and just sorta ... be cool. Give advice in an official capacity, make the new members feel welcome, and just generally be the kind of staffer you'd want the Omniverse to have. Y'know? That's not to say that anyone in staff is there to look pretty. Nobody likes crunching through the hard stuff, which is why we need everyone chipping in to make it an easy job
If you are interested, drop me a PM or reply here with a few of your reasons why. If you feel you're not ready for staffing right now but might be interested in the future, don't worry. This will not be the last time I recruit, though it might be a while.

Well, I’ve always held interest in a being a mod, but I’ll go through the requirements.
-I’m active almost all the time now-a-days. Have the Omniverse open whenever I have the laptop open. This might slow down when I have a job in real life, but I’ll still be around. Pretty sure of that.
-I shouldn’t be too hard to get in touch with. I mean, I can’t take a call on skype, but you could send me a text through that. I need to have it on more anyways.
-Know them pretty well, especially certain sections. I’ll definitely read through them again if I’m selected… and again… and again… and again…
-I have called out another member on this in the past. I think I can handle it. Not to mention, the Guu avatar gives me a license to be stern.
-I try my best. I do have some issues, but I try to be courteous to everyone in the chat.
-This one will be tricky, but I learn to get used to it.
-I’d volunteer for this.
Well, I might be qualified, but it doesn’t matter what I think, it’s up to you and the staff. I do have my faults, but I’m willing to try my hardest to represent the Omniverse if I’m selected. Thank you for the consideration none-the-less.

Just to say that I've received all your PMs. I won't have replied but thank you to everyone who's put your name forward. The response this time was totally unprecedented; I didn't expect so many people to get back to me. With that in mind, the competition is pretty fierce, so I mostly have my eye on those who've been here for a while and/or made a genuine effort to respond to what I look for in prospective staff members.
I'm planning on probably sticking to only adding one additional staff member, after DA, but I will keep in mind everyone who has applied. I may or may not do another interest check when it comes to the next staff member. So keep those PMs saved if you wrote a wall of text, I won't penalise you for submitting the same thing again

There is still a possibility of an eighth staff member joining the team in the near future, but I wanted to see how things go first. A huge thanks to everyone for their applications and their enthusiasm about helping the site. I want to encourage everyone, even those who don't want to be staff, to be able to help out in whatever ways they can; by adding to the immersion of the world by fleshing out our verses with new areas and NPCs, helping new members, writing and running stories, and just being a rock of knowledge in the sea of confusion. There will be something new that you guys will be able to volunteer for in the near future along these lines, so watch this space ---> <----

I would like to bump this topic once more and ask that if you've previously applied to re-register your interest as some folks have become more/less active, you might have more to say, etc. Activity is important but I'll mostly be looking at activity over a longer term, so don't be offended if you're newer and don't make the cut. Most essential is an understanding of the move system as that is our main job as staffers. That said, I'd encourage anyone who would be willing to do the job and honestly thinks they could handle it to at least give it a try, as you might be surprised. Please and thank you. m(_ _)m

Just as a heads up that I still have the current applications in consideration. I'm going to continue to watch things and see how we do with our current team. A lot of things are up in the air right now so by all means, if you think you would make a great staffer, continue to send me applications. I won't promise there's going to be another staff member anytime soon but I will keep everyone in mind.
